Eagles Place Seven on Indoor Academic All-MAC Team

The Green and White continue to excell both on the track and in the classroom

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team had a total of seven student-athletes earn Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors, the league office announced Monday, March 20.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
Earning the honor for Eastern was: sophomore Colin Burdette (Hilliard, Ohio - Hilliard Davidson), redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee), redshirt junior Caleb Hess (Owosso, Mich. - Owosso), junior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich. - Thomas J. Anderson), redshirt sophomore Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. - Avondale), redshirt junior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason), and sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. - Clinton).
Burdette ran in a five meets this past indoor season, primarily participating in the mile. The sophomore posted his best time of the season at the GVSU Tune Up, Feb. 17, clocking in with a personal-best mile time of 4:27.10. He also took fourth in the mile at the Hillsdale Classic, Feb. 3-4, crossing the finish line in 4:27.38.
Fink had another outstanding season for the Green and White, claiming a trio of MAC titles at the conference championships, Feb. 24-25. Specifically, the Maumee, Ohio native won the mile in 4:09.24, the 3000m in 8:12.75, and the 5000m in 14:28.38. The indoor season saw Fink earn MAC Track Athlete of the Week honors twice, while also winning MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week on two occasions. Additionally, he was also named MAC Championships MVP and First Team All-MAC.
Hess took part in the 800m and the mile throughout the year, with his best time coming at the Simmons-Harvey Invite, Jan. 14, where the redshirt junior nabbed a mark of 2:01.56. He also finished with a season-best time of 4:19.94 in the mile at the GVSU Tune Up, Feb. 17.
Jozwiak, who was one of the Eagles' top mid-distance runners of the season, paced the Green and White in the 800m. The Southgate, Mich. native finished fifth at the MAC Championships in the 800m, crossing the finish line in 1:54.57. His best time of the year, however, came at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 10, where he clocked in at 1:53.87.
Purcilly, who competed in the shot put during the indoor season, took part in six meets. The redshirt sophomore had his best shot put mark of the season at the Hillsdale Classic, Feb. 3-4, notching a career-best mark of 16.09 meters/ 52 feet 9.5-inches. He also competed at the conference championships, placing 10th with a throw of 15.64 meters/ 51 feet 3.75-inches.
Raymond, another strong EMU distance runner, claimed a pair of third-place finishes at the MAC Championships. Specifically, the Erie, Mich. native took home bronze in the 3000m with a time of 8:22.91, in addition to third in the 5000m after clocking in at 14:28.74. He also set a career-best time in the 5000m this past season, crossing the finish line in 14:21.28 at the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 3-4.
Finally, Underwood made a big leap from his freshman season, emerging as one of the team's top sprinters. Underwood set career-bests in the 60m, 200m, and 400m, while also finishing third in the 200m at the MAC Championships with a time of 21.91 seconds. The Clinton, Mich. native currently maintains personal-best times of 6.99 in the 60m, 21.69 in the 200m, and 48.13 in the 400m.
The Eagles begin the outdoor season later this week, as the squad will attend the Raleigh Relays, March 24-25, in Raleigh, N.C.
