Eagles Heading to Champaign for NCAA Regionals

The Green and White will travel back to Illinois for its second-ever regionals

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The No. 22 Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team learned today, March 20, that the team will be traveling to Champaign, Ill. for NCAA Regionals, April 1. The announcement, which was made on the NCAA Selection Show, marks the second time that the Eagles have qualified for the event as a team.
Joining the Eagles at the Champaign Regional will be No. 5 UCLA, No. 8 Oregon State, No. 17 Iowa, No. 19 Illinois, and No. 26 Ohio State.
NCAA Regional selection is primarily based on Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) ranking, with the top-36 making the cut. The Eagles consistently improved throughout the season, leaping into the top-25 on Feb. 27 at No. 24.
The Green and White have remained in the top-25 since then, most recently coming in at No. 22 overall, while also being the top-ranked Mid-American Conference team.
The Eagles had another strong regular season, culminating in the team's first ever MAC Regular Season Championship. Within the conference, the Green and White finished 5-1 with victories over Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Kent State, Ball State, and Bowling Green. Eastern also concluded the regular season with two scores of 196-or-better, including a 196.225 on the road at West Virginia, March 5.
The end of the season momentum carried over to the MAC Championships, as the team claimed its third ever MAC title with an incredible 196.500. In fact, 196.500 is the second best team total in the EMU record books. The Eagles notched a 49-or-better on each event for the first time this season at the conference championships, while also breaking the program record on bars with a 49.300.
The Green and White are one of three teams from the MAC to qualify for NCAA Regionals. No. 28 Central Michigan will be heading to Fayetteville, Ark., while No. 31 Kent State travels to Morgantown, W. Va.
