Eight Eagles Qualify for Thursday Night's Championship Heats

CARBONDALE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team will send eight Eagles into Thursday night's championship heats at the Mid-American Conference Championships after a strong showing in the preliminary session, March 2.
Eastern Michigan opened the day with a display of their depth in the 500 Freestyle, as the Eagles claimed seven slots in the top-22. Senior Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.) paced the Green and White's showing, turning in a season-best time of 4:24.98, good for the second-best time in the session. Freshman Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy Center) will join Lichtenberg in the championship heat after touching in with the sixth-best time in prelims. Arrieta clocked in with a career-best time of 4:29.01 to earn his lane in Thursday night's race. Meanwhile, senior Chris Cutter (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers) qualified for the consolation finals with a season-best time of 4:33.31, which ranked 13th-best.
The Eagles' balanced performance carried over into the 200 Individual Medley, where EMU saw four more qualify to championship heats. Sophomores led the way, turning in a trio of career-bests. Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) was EMU's top-finisher, clocking in with a career-best time of 1:48.51 to take the fifth-seeded time into tonight. Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) and Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wis.-Greenfield) also turned in career-bests, finishing the race in 1:49.36 and 1:49.96, respectively, and will join senior Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) in the 'B' final heat.
In the final event of the day, freshman Mark Krusinski (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights) capped an impressive session for the Green and White in the 50 Free. Krusinki clocked in with a career-best time of 20.65, which was also the best time by an Eagle this season. Krusinki's time ranks ninth in prelims, giving him the top-seeded mark in the consolation finals.
EMU returns to the pool for the championship heats tonight, beginning at 8 p.m.
