The junior was named a First Team All-American last week

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Junior distance runner Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team was selected as the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today, March 15.

After breaking the program record in the 5000m earlier this season to punch her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, McDermitt set a new record yet again. This time around, the Davison, Mich. native clocked in with a time of 15:43.95, crushing her previous career-best time of 15:50.16 to cement herself as the top EMU 5000m runner in the record books by nearly 29 seconds.

McDermitt finished the race in sixth-place, matching her seed coming into the event. Based on her top-eight finish, the junior earned First Team All-American honors for the first time in her career. With that, she becomes just the eighth Eagle to earn first team accolades all-time, with the most recent coming in 2014 when Sarah Chauchard placed sixth in the pentathlon.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. Currently, McDermitt holds a perfect 4.0 in exercise science. This marks the second time this season that McDermitt has earned the award, as she also received the honor during the cross country season.
