Free throws resulted in donation to Swoop’s Food Pantry

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The United Dairy Industry of Michigan (UDIM) partnered with the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics to support the on-campus Swoop's Student Food Pantry. For every free throw made at a home game throughout EMU's 2016-17 basketball season, Michigan's dairy farmers donated funds that will be used to help EMU students have protein and calcium to help them stay strong during the semester.

In total, 455 free throws were made and UDIM donated $1,000 to Swoop's Student Food Pantry. There were a combined 30 EMU men's and women's basketball home games this season at the EMU Convocation Center.

Dairy products are often one of the most requested items at food pantries, however, due to the fact that they are perishable, they are most often not available.

"Dairy is essential to a healthy diet," said UDIM CEO Sharon Toth, MPH, RDN. "Partnering with EMU's basketball teams was a fun way to raise awareness around Swoop's, the needs of students on-campus, and for Michigan's dairy farmers to give back. Making sure young people have access to a nutritious food option is a priority for UDIM."

Swoop's Student Food Pantry is a campus-based organization that is run by a leadership board consisting of EMU faculty, staff, students, and alumni volunteers. Its mission is to provide current EMU students in need with food assistance and additional resources to positively impact their well-being and college success.

"Swoop's Food Pantry is very thankful for the donation as this will greatly benefit EMU students, said Haley Moraniec, founder and graduate assistant for Swoop's Food Pantry. Dairy is something that students really appreciate when they are able to find it in Swoop's Food Pantry. This donation will greatly assist the Pantry as dairy products are very difficult to keep stocked as they tend to be more expensive."

The goal of Swoop's Student Food Pantry is to create a sustainable resource for students to temporarily help meet food needs, distribute food discreetly in easily accessible and safe environments on-campus, and to provide additional resources and community partners to assure the sustainability of the pantry.
