The six-run deficit inthe first four innings proved too much to overcome
FRESNO, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team got in another early hole that it could not dig itself out of in a 10-2 defeat to Fresno State Saturday evening, March 11 at Bob Bennett Stadium.
The Eagles (3-12) found themselves down 6-0 early and, unlike last night when they battled back from seven down, they couldn't find the offense necessary to get the victory.
Overall, the Eagles notched six hits, with two coming off the bat of freshman Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline). Redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) also reached base safely three times, with a single and a pair of walks.
The Bulldogs (7-6) came out with a commanding lead once again, getting two in the first and second and one in the third and fourth to lead it 6-0 before the Eagles even recorded a hit.
EMU's first knock came in the form of a double from redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) with two outs in the fifth. That was followed immediately by a single from Owings and after a steal, there were runners on second and third. With freshman Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) at the dish, a grounder to the pitcher caused an overthrow, scoring both runners to make it 6-2.
Fresno responded immediately though, getting two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on three hits making it 8-2 after five frames. The sixth and seventh were scoreless after junior Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shasta (Butte C.C.)) breezed through them without allowing a base runner, striking out one.
The eighth was a different story though as Fresno put the game almost out of reach with a two-run double to make it 10-2 heading into EMU's final turn at the plate. Despite getting a couple runners on in the ninth, the Bulldogs locked down the eight-run win.
EMU and Fresno will play the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon, March 12. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
