YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team remains on the road this weekend, heading to meets in Iowa and Michigan, Feb. 10-11. Eastern will have a small number of distance runners compete at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, while others will return to Allendale, Mich. for the GVSU Big Meet.
Most recently, EMU competed at both the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. and the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio, Feb. 3-4. The Eagles were led by the distance squad, who had a number of strong performances over the weekend.
Day one of competition at the pair of meets saw redshirt sophomore Allie Knoll (Warren, Mich. – Warren Mott) have a career day in the 5000m, as she clocked in at 17:09.22, which was a personal-best by nearly a minute, as well as the ninth-quickest mark in program history. Junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) also competed in the long jump, bringing home eighth with a jump of 5.77 meters/ 18 feet 11.25-inches.
Day two was where the Green and White really shined, especially in South Bend. Junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) had a strong day in the 400m dash, bringing home 21st with a career-best time of 55.68 seconds. Moving to mid-distance, junior Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio – Circleville) ran in the 800m, finishing with a career-best time of 2:12.24, putting her at ninth in the EMU record books. In the mile, junior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) had a fantastic day, running the third-quickest mile in program history. The Clinton Twp., Mich. native finished in 11th-place, posting a career-best time of 4:41.18.
The Eagles' highlight of the day came in the 3000m run, where junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) had the best 3000m race in program history. McDermitt finished third in the loaded field, clocking in with a career-best time of 9:10.42, which was a career-best and the best 3000m time in the EMU record books. Sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) had another excellent race, crossing the finish line in a career-best 9:41.69, which bumped her to eighth in the EMU record books.
Finally, Dreimane secured a bronze for EMU in the triple jump, finishing with an indoor-best mark of 12.66 meters/ 41 feet 6.5-inches.
Three of EMU's marks from the weekend were good enough to crack the top-50 of the Division I Indoor Qualifying List. Cizmas' mile time catapulted her to No. 28 on the list, five spots ahead of senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83). McDermitt's incredible 3000m time put her in the top-10, as she currently holds the No. 8 spot. Finally, Dreimane's triple jump moved her to No. 34 in the nation.
Similar to last week, the Green and White also hold some impressive rankings when it comes to the new event squad rankings. Eastern still holds a pair of top-five spots in both the mile and the 5000m, as EMU ranks No. 5 in the mile and No. 3 in the 5000m. The distance squad also ranks within the top-15 in the 3000m, coming in at No. 12.
The Iowa State Classic is slated to begin tomorrow, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. CT with the men's long jump. Running events will begin at noon, starting with the women's 60m dash prelims. Action picks back up on Saturday at noon with the men's shot put, while the women's 60m hurdles prelims marks the start of the running events. For the complete schedule of events, please click here.
