YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- With a four-meet road stretch in the books, the Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team returns home for a meet against Kent State, Friday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. The meet serves as part of the 'Beauty and the Beast' event in conjunction with the EMU wrestling team, and will take place in Bowen Field House.

Scouting the Competition: Kent State comes into the meet ranked No. 34 in the nation, holding an average team score of 194.438, as well as a season-high 195.525. The Flashes' top event so far this year has been floor, where they are tied for No. 28 with an average event total of 48.863, and a whopping season-high 49.400. They are also in the top-40 on vault and bars, sitting at No. 35 and No. 34, respectively.
The team is led by a very talented gymnast, Rachel Stypinski, who has scored a 39.525 in the all-around this year. Stypinski has scored a 9.9 or better on bars, beam, and floor so far this season. Additionally, Brooke Timko has notched a 9.8 or better on vault and bars, while Jade Brown, Jordan Hardison, and Skyelee Lamano have all notched a 9.875 on floor.
Last Time Against the Golden Flashes: The Eagles and the Golden Flashes most recently met in the regular season last year, as Eastern traveled to Kent, Ohio, March 4. KSU came out on top, 195.025 - 194.025, after some miscues by the Eagles on beam.
Eastern began on bars, notching a 48.800 behind a 9.875 from Kendall Valentin, and a pair of 9.75's from Catie Conrad and Lacey Rubin. From there, the team scored a 48.725 on vault, as Valentin led the way once again with a 9.80. Rachel Slocum pitched in a 9.775, while Conrad and Kimberly Ebeyer each scored a 9.725.
The Eagles were very consistent on floor, as four Eagles scored a 9.80. Ebeyer, Ciara Gresham, Sydney McEachern, and Slocum all posted a 9.8, with Gresham's being a career-high. Finally, the Green and White concluded the meet on beam, where Conrad had a great routine and earned a personal-best 9.875.
Beauty and the Beast Moved to Bowen: Due to a change in the EMU men's basketball schedule, Eastern's home meet against Kent State, Feb. 10, which is part of the 'Beauty and the Beast' event has been moved to Bowen Field House. The event will still take place at 7 p.m., and admission will be free to all. The competition will be a throwback of sorts for the team, as gymnastics meets previously took place in Bowen prior to moving to the Convocation Center in 2015.
EMU in the Land of Lincoln: This season, the Green and White will travel to a total of three meets in the state of Illinois. The first competition came back in early January, as EMU attended a quad-meet at the University of Illinois, coming in second with a team score of 194.725. Last weekend, the Eagles defeated UIC in the Windy City, 194.550 - 193.325, to move Eastern to 3-1 in the state so far. EMU will cap off the trio of meets next weekend, heading to DeKalb, Ill. for a bout with Northern Illinois.
Top EMU Bars Squad: With five meets in the books for the 2017 season, the Eagles currently own three of the top-10 event totals on bars in program history. This season's team owns the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 8 bars scores this year, and with six meets remaining, they will have plenty of opportunities to increase that number.
Valentin Claims Pair of Awards: For her performance at Western Michigan, Jan. 29, Kendall Valentin was named both the MAC Specialist of the Week, as well as the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week. The Holmdel, N.J. native began the meet in Kalamazoo on bars, tying her career-best with another excellent 9.925, highlighted by a clutch stuck dismount. On the final event of the day, the junior posted a 9.875 to pace the Green and White on beam, helping Eastern finish with the ninth-best beam total in program history. This marks Valentin's second time earning both awards.
EMU in the Rankings: With five meets in the books, the Eagles rank No. 30 in the nation, holding an average team score of 194.530 and a season-high of 195.925. Eastern remains one of the best bars teams in the country, as EMU now sits in a tie for No. 8 with an average event score of 49.110 and a season-best 49.250. The other three events are tightly grouped, as the squad comes in at No. 41 on beam and floor, and No. 43 on vault.
Kendall Valentin remains among the nation's elite on bars, as she maintains a tie for No. 11 on the event with an average score of 9.875, and a season-best 9.925. Catie Conrad has also risen up the ranks, as she sits at No. 26 with an average score of 9.855, while Lacey Rubin is just outside of the top-50 in a tie for No. 57.
Eagles Break Bars Record: Eastern kicked things up a notch on bars at WMU, breaking the program record with an impressive event total of 49.250. Kendall Valentin led the way, tying her career-best with a 9.925. Catie Conrad also tied her personal-best, scoring a 9.90. From there, Natalie Gervais and Lacey Rubin both notched a 9.825, while Sydney McEachern posted a 9.775.
Rising Beam Scores: The Green and White have been ascending on beam throughout the season. In fact, the team's event scores on beam rose throughout the first four meets. At CMU, the Eagles notched a 48.950, which tied for the 10th-best beam total in program history, and a 48.975 at WMU, tying the ninth-best beam score in the record books.
Consistency at CMU: The Eagles were able to defeat Central Michigan in large part due to consistency across the board. In total, the Green and White went a perfect 24-for-24 at the meet, with the lowest score being just a 9.525, which was not counted. All four event scores were within .250 of being a 49. In fact, Eastern had their best event scores of the season on all four events.
Consistency from Conrad and McEachern: Through the first five meets of the season, Catie Conrad and Sydney McEachern have been incredibly consistent for the Eagles. In total, the pair have competed a total of 27 routines, posting 26 hit routines. Conrad has already posted five scores of 9.8 or better on bars, including a big 9.9 at WMU, as well as three scores of 9.75 or better on beam. McEachern has been one of the team's leader on floor, notching a 9.825 in Kalamazoo.

Newcomers in the Lineup: A number of newcomers to the lineup have been making an impact early in the season. On vault, Megan Hultgren debuted a yurchenko half, notching a career-best 9.775 at UIC. Additionally, Ciara Gresham competed on beam against Kentucky, Jan. 6, scoring a solid 9.70. Sydney Audet continues to impress on floor, posting a career-best 9.825 on floor at CMU, while freshman Emili Dobronics made her EMU debut on floor in Mount Pleasant, scoring a 9.75. Dobronics then added two more events to her arsenal at WMU, competing on both vault and beam, notching two hits.
Eagles Welcome Ella Dover: The Eagles, in unison with Team IMPACT, announced Thursday, Dec. 8, that the team signed 10-year old Ella Dover to a ceremonial letter of commitment to join the team for the next few years.
Ella suffers from chronic epilepsy and has multiple seizures daily. This, however, does not have an impact on her attitude, as she is always smiling and approaching life with a positive mentality. Ella will be a regular at practices and meets, and will also join the Green and White for team activities and events throughout the year. In fact, Ella was in attendance for the team's season opener against Kentucky, in addition to making the trip to Kalamazoo for the WMU meet.
Looking Ahead: After one meet at home, the Green and White hit the road and head west again. This time around, the Eagles will go further west than Chicago, heading to DeKalb, Ill. for a bout with the Northern Illinois Huskies, Friday, Feb. 17, at 6 p.m.
