The Eagles singed nine high school seniors to national letters of intent
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Soccer Coach Scott Hall announced the signing of nine high school seniors to letters of intent Monday, Feb. 7. The Eagles inked Chloe Chatzis (Macomb, Mich.-Henry Ford II), Madeline Olson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville), Alia Frederick (Linden, Mich.-Linden), Lauren Cimino (Sterling Heights, Mich.-Henry Ford II), Tessa Osborne (Mentor, Ohio-Lake Catholic), Chelsea Abbotts (Ottawa, Ontario-Mother Teresa), Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay), Marla Cobetto (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton), and Kennady Kuhlman (Howell, Mich.-Hartland).
"This is a big group of student-athletes who we will count on early in their careers," Hall said. "It was really important for us to address our specific needs with this class. We cannot wait to see their potential."
The talented group includes six players from the state of Michigan, one from Illinois, one from Ohio, and one Canadian. Additionally, the class is comprised of one goalkeeper, four defenders, two forwards, and two midielders.
Chatzis is one of six Michiganders in the Eagles' class. Hailing from Macomb, Mich., Chatzis is a dynamic 5-foot-4 midfielder. A three-year letterwinner at Henry Ford II, Chatzis led the Falcons to back-to-back district championships.
"Chloe is a two-way midfield player who can score and create plays," Hall said. "She is as good off the dribble as she is passing to eliminate players."
Olson a 5-foot-4 midfielder from Libertyville, Ill., comes to Ypsilanti after a successful prep career at Libertyville High School. As a Wildcat, Olson was a four-year letterwinner in soccer, while also playing basketball and running cross country. On the pitch, Olson led the Wildcats to a regional championship, as well as a runner-up sectional finish.
"Maddie can play anywhere in the midfield," Hall added. "What really caught our attention was her play making ability. She is a relentless competitor who will bring high intensity to both practice and games."
An athletic defender from Linden, Mich., Frederick stands at 5-foot-9. The speedy outside back has had an impressive prep career at Linden High School. A three-time all-district selection, Frederick is also a two-time all-league honoree and has been named all-region twice. She is also a three-time all-state selection and has fueled the Eagles to league and district titles. A well-rounded athlete, Frederick has also found success in cross country and track and field. In track, Frederick is a two-time all-league and all-region awardwinner. She has also been named all-state and academic all-state for both cross country and track and field. With her speed and stout defensive play, Frederick will fill a void at outside back for the Green and White.
"Alia is quite an athlete," Hall remarked. "Beyond her soccer ability, she has finished in the top-10 at the state cross country meet each of the past two years. She is a wing defender who can fly from end line to end line defending and attacking. We look forward to her competing for a starting spot on the backline."
A product of Sterling Heights, Mich., Crimino will join high school teammate Chatzis at EMU. Crimino is a four-year letterwinner for the Falcons, where she has helped Henry Ford II High School to four district championships, as well as a state semifinals appearance.
"We are excited to get Lauren on campus," Hall said. "She was one of our first commitments to this class, but suffered some injuries which have held her out. With three graduating from the backline, she has the opportunity to break into the starting lineup as she recovers."
Osborne makes the trip north from her hometown of Mentor, Ohio, where she attended Lake Catholic High School. As a Cougar, Osborne racked up honors in the classroom as well as on the field. Academically, Osborne is a National Honor Society member, has been named the Presidential Service Awardee, and has participated in student government. On the pitch, the 5-foot-5 defender has been named to the All-Greater Cleveland Second Team, Second Team All-North Coast League (NCL), First Team All-News Herald, First Team All-NCL, First Team All-Greater Cleveland, and All-Ohio honorable mention. An aggressive defender, Osborne led the Cougars to two district championships, as well as two regional finals appearances.
"Tessa can play anywhere across the back," Hall stated. "She has the speed and toughness, along with the ability to play under pressure. She will be a great defender in the Mid-American Conference."
The lone Canadian in this year's class, Abbotts is a native of Ottawa, Ontario where she attended Mother Teresa High School. A talented goalkeeper, Abbotts was a four-year letterwinner and helped her squad to three OFSAA appearances, and an OYSL East Side Championship.
"Chelsea is our first Canadian from Ottawa," Hall shared. "She is a great shot stopper and organizer. We look for her to push our goalkeeping play to another level."
Shira is a 5-foot-8 defender out of Anchor Bay High School. The New Baltimore, Mich. native is a two-time all-district honoree, two-time all-county selection, all-state awardwinner, and has been named All-Macomb Area Conference.
"With the loss of our centerbacks to graduation, Lindsey is solid addition to our program. "Hall said. "She brings athleticism, size, pace, and a smooth comfort for the ball that will transition well."
Standing at 5-foot-4, Cobbetto is a forward with tremendous speed that is versatile enough to play in the midfield. A four-year letterwinner at Trenton High School, the Trenton, Mich. native is a two-time all-league awardwinner, as well as a two-time all-district honoree for the Trojans. Cobetto also led her team to a state semifinals appearance in 2014.
"Marla is a relentless attacker who creates a lot of chances on goal," said Hall. Her pace and competitive nature make her extremely hard to defend. We look forward to using her as a wide player alongside our other forwards."
Kulhman rounds out this year's talented class. A 5-foot-4 forward out of Howell, Mich., Kuhlman was a four-year lettwinner at Hartland High School, the same high school as former EMU standouts Rachel Washburn and Michelle Rollins.
"What we liked about Kennedy was two fold," Hall stated. "She can play on either the right or left and can play multiple positions with ease. She can score, while she also has the ability to create plays for her teammates."
