TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team traveled to Toledo, Ohio, to square off with the University of Toledo Tuesday, Feb. 7. The Eagles (13-11, 5-6 MAC) were handed their third loss in a row when the Rockets (12-12, 5-6 MAC) knocked off the Green and White, 73-57, at John F. Savage Arena.
The Eagles' offense struggled in the contest, shooting just 39.1 percent from the floor, meanwhile Toledo knocked down at a scorching 52.8 percent. The Rockets connected on 10 triples while the Green and White struggled, hitting just three three-pointers in the game. Despite forcing 15 Toledo turnovers and turning the ball over just nine times, the Eagles were only able to manage 12 points off those flip flops.
Senior Ty Toney (Atlanta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands)) paced the Eagle offense, scoring 13 points on 6-of-16 shooting, while senior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) poured in 11. Sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) notched nine points and led the game with 11 rebounds, while junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) and redshirt sophomore Jordan Nobles (Canton, Mich.-Canton) each contributed eight points each, respectively.
The Green and White opened the scoring with a Mangum floater before the Rockets scored six in a row on a pair of Jordan Lauf three pointers. Both squads went scoreless for over two minutes before Toledo knocked down a layup with 15:47 to go. Eastern responded with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 9-8, with 14:05 left in play.
After a UT make, Bond came back down the floor and finished an old-fashioned three-point play after finishing through Toledo contact to regain the lead, 12-10, with just under 13 minutes to go in the first half. The Rockets responded with five consecutive, knocking down their third triple to this point. Buckets were traded until the third timeout with Toledo holding a one-point lead, 19-18, with 6:35 to go.
The two squads were offensively challenged through the remainder of the first half as the Rockets closed out the final five minutes with a 7-4 run and the Green and White trailed, 26-22, at the break.
Toledo scored on four of its first five possessions in the second half, extending the Rocket lead to nine, 35-26. The Green and White was able to get back to within five, however the Midnight Blue and Gold responded by scoring eight in a row and taking a double-digit lead, 48-35, for the first time in the game at the 11:32 mark.
The Eagles attempted to make a run as Mangum scored five-straight for EMU before Toledo's Jonathan Williams connected on a triple to keep the double digit advantage with 10:16 to go in the game. Toney went on a 9-3 run of his own to bring Eastern back within seven, 54-47, with just over seven minutes to go.
The Toney run, however, sparked a quick 8-0 Toledo run on the back of a pair of three pointers to give the Rockets a 15-point, 62-47, advantage. Toney ended that Rocket spurt with a floater on the next possession but UT remained in control down the stretch finishing on an 11-8 run to complete the victory over EMU, 73-57.
The Green and White return home Friday, Feb. 10, to square off with the University of Akron at 7 p.m. The game will be a rematch of the Eagles' 70-63 setback at Akron, Jan. 20, and will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
