The Green and White capped off four straight road meets with a win at UIC

CHICAGO, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team capped off four straight road meets with a victory against the University of Illinois-Chicago today, Feb. 5, by a final score of 194.550 – 193.325. The Eagles had another strong day on bars, while also posting the team's best vault total of the season.
"I thought we had a decent day overall, but we weren't as sharp in some areas as we had been in training," remarked Head Coach Sarah Brown. "This marks the conclusion of a four-week road stretch, so we're looking forward to being at home for 'Beauty and the Beast,' and improving on each event as the season progresses."
Eastern kicked off the meet on bars once again as the visiting team. For the fourth consecutive meet, the Green and White notched an event total of 49 or better, this time coming up with a 49.025, which ties the 10th-best bars total in the EMU record books. After scoring a 9.9 last week, junior Catie Conrad (Brighton, Mich. – Brighton) had another excellent outing, notching a 9.875 to pace the Eagles. Senior Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y. – Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) continued her strong start to the season, posting a 9.8, which is her fourth 9.8 or better this year. Additionally, junior Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J. – Holmdel) matched Rubin with a 9.8 of her own, while the senior duo of Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Sturgeon Heights) and Sydney McEachern (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Kelvin) each scored a 9.775. EMU led by .575 after the first rotation, as UIC totaled a 48.450 on vault.
The Eagles then traveled to vault, where they had their best rotation of the year. The Green and White totaled a 48.875 on the event, besting their previous season-high by .100. Sophomore Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill. – Belleville) had the finest vault of her career, scoring a personal-best 9.800, while junior Julia Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz. – Mesquite) had her best vault of the season with a 9.8 of her own. Conrad and sophomore Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill. – Sacred Heart Classical Center) also earned the same scores, both walking away with a 9.775, with Hultgren's being a career-best. Finally, freshman Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill. – Carl Sandburg) earned EMU's third career-high on the event, notching a 9.725. With half of the meet complete, Eastern remained in front, 97.900 – 97.350.
Moving onto floor, the Green and White totaled a 48.475 behind a strong performance from junior Megan Marino (Girard, Ohio – Howland). Marino scored a 9.825, matching her career-best, which was set two weeks ago at CMU. Fellow junior Kirsten Gendron (Birch Run, Mich. – Frankenmuth) also had a nice routine, posting a 9.725. From there, Gresham and McEachern scored 9.675 and 9.65, respectively. Heading into the last rotation, Eastern increased the lead to nearly an entire point, 146.375 – 145.400.
Eastern rounded out the day on beam, as two Eagles tied for the beam title. Conrad and Rubin both had fantastic routines, as each notched a 9.825 to lead the Green and White. This marked Conrad's second score of 9.8 or better this season, while it was Rubin's third. Hultgren also had a solid day, earning a 9.75, while Gervais was just behind her with a 9.675. With all the scores finalized, the Eagles walked out of the Windy City with a 194.550 – 193.325 victory.
The Eagles finally return home next week for the first time since early January. Eastern will host Kent State as part of the 'Beauty and the Beast' event in conjunction with the EMU wrestling team. The meet will be hosted inside Bowen Field House and is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., with admission being free to all.
