CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Mid-American Conference announced today, Feb. 28, that eight Eastern Michigan University women's track and field student-athletes earned spots on the All-MAC teams. In total, EMU put six on the first team, the most in the conference, in addition to two on the second team.
Senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83) was named All-MAC first team for the second time in her career, as she claimed event titles in the mile and the 5000m, while also taking third in the 3000m. Based on her performance, Bogdanova was also named Most Valuable Performer following the championships.
Junior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. - Chippewa Valley) earned first team honors for the third straight season, this time winning the 800m while also helping EMU to a distance medley relay victory. Cizmas finished the 800m in 2:10.16 to claim gold, while the DMR team clocked in at 11:39.65. Sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. - Zionsville Community) also ran a leg of the DMR, in addition to taking gold in the 3000m. Meyers won her first-career event title in the 3000m with a time of 9:33.67, which was a personal-best and the sixth-best in program history. At the conclusion of the meet, Meyers was named Most Outstanding Track Performer.
Rounding out the DMR group was senior Khadesha James (Irvington, N.J. - Irvington) and junior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. - Rockford Lutheran). James also earned first team honors last season, while this is the first time Mesa has received the award. Finally, junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. - Hempfield Area) was named All-MAC first team for the first time in the indoor season, claiming the crown in the 200m with a career-best time of 24.31 seconds, which was also the 10th-best in the EMU record books.
A pair of Eagles also earned second team honors, as freshman Micah Johnston and junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) each received the award. Johnston finished runner-up in the 400m, posting a personal-best time of 55.44 seconds, while McDermitt claimed silver in the 3000m and bronze in the 5000m. The honor is the first for Johnston, while McDermitt was named first team the last two years.
The Eagles now wait and see if any individuals earned a spot in the upcoming NCAA Championships, which will be held in two weeks, March 10-11, down in College Station, Texas.
