Lee Sets EMU Single-Game Scoring Record in 109-81 Victory at CMU

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – On the back of a 50 point performance by redshirt senior Ray Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus), the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team defeated Central Michigan University, 109-81, Tuesday night, Feb. 28, at McGuirk Arena. In the victory, the Eagles (15-15, 7-10 MAC) scored the most points in a single game against a Division I team since they notched 109 against Ball State University, Jan. 20, 1996.
Eastern Michigan set a multitude of records in the victory over CMU. Lee's 50 points set a single game record for any student-athlete in EMU history, while his 10 three-point makes were the most by a player donning the Green and White. Additionally, the Detroit, Mich. native's 17 field goal makes tied the fourth-most in a single game for an EMU student-athlete. The Eagles connected on 16 three-point field goals, which ranked as the most in single game history.
Outside of Lee's 50 points, he added four assists, a steal and a block, while senior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) added 24 points, connecting of five triples. Mangum's five three point makes gave him 91 for the season, surpassing Carl Thomas (1990-91) single season three point record of 89 for the most in a single season at Eastern Michigan. Sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) added his 36th career double-double by grabbing 18 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) was a sound distributor for EMU, dishing out seven assists to go along with zero turnovers and two steals.
As a team, Eastern Michigan shot at a 51.4 percent clip (38-of-74) and knocked down a program-record 16 three pointers on 36 attempts, good for a 44.4 percent. The Eagles had 18 assists, compared to just seven turnovers while also blocking eight shots in the victory.
Central Michigan drew first blood with a Braylon Rayson floater but Lee responded on the next possession with a long ball, sparking an 11-0 run to jump out to a quick 11-2 lead with 16 minutes left in the frame. CMU responded with another Rayson jumper but Eastern grabbed another 5-2 run and jumped out to its first double-digit lead, 16-6, at the 14:45 mark.
The Chippewas cut back into the lead and trailed by just six with 13:39 to go, EMU got back after it with three triples in consecutive possessions to get a 15-point advantage, 25-10, at the 12:33 mark. After a quick Rayson bucket, the Green and White continued to roll, scoring six in a row to grab a 19 point lead with just over 11 minutes to go.
The two squads traded buckets before the Chippewas cut back into the lead, coming to within 14 after five straight points. With just under four minutes to go, the Eagles responded holding to CMU to just two points through the remainder of the first half. The Green and White added 13 more points to its 11 more to its lead to notch a 23 point, 52-29, lead with 1:04 to go. After a disputed missed three-pointer by CMU, the Chippewas' head coach, Keno Davis, was assessed for a technical foul allowing Lee to extend Eastern's lead to the largest of the first half, 54-29, which is where the score stayed heading into the break.
Lee put up 26 points in the first half, scoring on 8-of-10 field goal attempts, while knocking down 6-of-7 triples in the first 20 minutes of play. Thompson went a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor, grabbing 10 points and nine rebounds while Mangum went 6-of-9 from the field with 4-of-6 from the long line to net 17 points. As a team, the Green and White shot 54.5 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from beyond the arc in the first stanza. Conversely, the Eagles held Central to just 33.3 percent from the floor, while shocking the Chips from downtown, keeping them to just one three-point make in 15 tries.
EMU extended its lead to 34, 65-31, with a 7-2 run over the first 2:23 of the second half as Lee poured in five points and an assist on a Thompson slam dunk. The Eagles traded buckets until they were able to extend the lead to 43, 80-37, at the 14:12 mark following a 14-4 run. That run included Lee's final bucket on a fade away corner three-pointer to grab his 50th point.
Back and forth play saw the Eagles remain up before in the late goings, CMU was able to cut into the lead and trailed by 27, 104-77, with 2:13 to go. The Eagles and Chippewas traded buckets through the rest of the game before EMU walked away from McGuirk Arena with a 109-81 victory.
Eastern Michigan closes out the 2016-17 regular season Friday night, March 3, when it hosts the University of Toledo on Senior Day. The Eagles will honor its four seniors Quaran Jones, Ray Lee, Willie Mangum IV and Ty Toney prior to tip-off at 7 p.m.
