Women's Golf Rallies on Final Day to Win Rio Verde Invite

RIO VERDE, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) -- Led by a pair of top-11 finishes, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished atop the leaderboard at the 15th Annual Rio Verde Invitational Sunday, Feb. 26. The Eagles saved their best for last with a final round 292 to cap the weekend with a 54-hole tally of 889 (300-297-292), the six lowest total in program history.
Overall, the victory marked the 21st title in the program's history and the second of the year for the Eagles, who won the Kzoo Classic, Oct. 3-4, 2016. It marked the second team championship during Head Coach Pina Gentile's tenure.
Freshman Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) posted her first career top 10 showing, as she tied for eighth-place with a three day total of 221 (75-73-73) on the par-72, 6,215 yard White Wing Golf Course. The Waterville, Ohio native's previous best finish came coincidentally at another tournament hosted by Western Michigan University, tieing for 13th at the Kzoo Classic with a 231 (78-73-80).
The University of Akron's Danielle Nicholson took home medalist honors with a 215 (73-70-72) ahead of UMKC's Chandler Gallagher (69-72-75=216).
Senior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) shaved five strokes off her final round to finish with a 70 in a tie for 11th. Murphy's tally of 222 (75-75-70) marked the fifth consecutive time she has placed 11th-or-better this year. Junior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) recorded a 75 to take 25th with a 226 (76-75-75). Sophomore Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) shot a 74 in round three for a 227 (72-81-74). Rounding out the field for EMU was sophomore Kritsuda Apiwatthanadol (Bangkok, Thailand-Somtawin Witead Suska Huaymongkhon School), who notched an 83 for 87th with a tournament score of 242 (85-74-83).
The Eagles return to action next at the 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate in Augusta, Ga., March 17-19.
