Junior Trisha Trujillo registered the 100th strikeout of her career
MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) was electric in the circle and senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) came up clutch once again as the Eastern Michigan University softball team swept its final two games of a 12-game stint in Florida, Feb. 26. EMU rode an early lead to a 4-3 win over Stony Brook University, before walking-off in extras against the University of Detroit Mercy, 5-4.
Game #1: Eastern Michigan 4, Stony Brook 3
Sophomores Lucy Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif.-Stockdale) and Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) turned in multi-hit efforts in EMU's win over Stony Brook. Lopez turned in her best showing of the season, going 3-for-3 with a double. Logan added a 2-for-3 effort, including an RBI single.
In the circle, the Eagles benefited from a spectacular day by Trujillo. Trujillo went the distance, striking out four, and allowing just six hits.
Trujillo garnered early run support after opening the game with a 1-2-3 inning, as senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) put a 2-0 offering over the center field fence. The solo shot put the Green and White up, 1-0, a lead EMU would not relinquish.
After Trujillo fanned back-to-back batters in the second, Kriegshauser's sacrifice fly brought junior Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) home from third.
Stony Brook got one back in the third, capitalizing on an EMU miscue to make the score 2-1, in favor of the Eagles.
An RBI single by Logan in the bottom of the third pushed Eastern's lead back to two, 3-1, through three innings.
The Seawolves plated another run in the fifth, taking advantage of an errant throw, but the Eagles responded with a run of their own. Freshman Danielle Rico (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Grand Terrace) smacked an RBI double to the fence, giving EMU a 4-2 edge heading into the sixth.
Another Eastern Michigan error made things interesting as the Seawolves pulled within one, but Trujillo pitched her way out of the jam. The Whittier, Calif. native found herself in a similar situation in the top of the seventh as another error loaded the bases. With the tying run standing on third, Trujillo buckled down and induced a game-ending groundout to notch her third win of the season.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 5, Detroit Mercy 4
Eastern stuck with what was working in its second game of the day, riding the hot-handed Trujillo, but an early jam brought sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) out of the dugout in relief with one away. Miranda inherited bases loaded with just one out, but escaped with minimal damage, thanks in large part to a on-the-money throw from junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan). UDM singled to center with the bases juiced, scoring one, but an incredible throw by Hostetler allowed Wagner to put down a tag to save a second run from scoring.
The Titans added another run in the third on a solo shot to center field.
Junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) put the Eagles on the board in the third, smacking an RBI double to the right field fence, with Lopez on third after a leadoff single. Olmos' RBI knock cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
Detroit got the run back in the fourth on another solo shot, this time to left, pushing the score to 3-1. The home run saw another pitching change for the Eagles, as freshman Savanah White (Visalia, Calif.-Redwood) entered in relief. Making the first appearance out of her career, White settled down after a walk and got three straight outs to send the Green and White back to the plate.
The Eagles could not muster a hit at the plate in the fourth, stranding one who reached via error, but a gritty inning of work by White kept the 3-1 score intact with EMU set to bat in the bottom of the fifth.
Lopez kicked off the Eagles half of the inning with a single to right, before Kriegshauser singled to left to put two on with nobody out. A great sacrifice bunt by Wagner moved the runners to second and third for Olmos, at which point Head Coach Melissa Gentile signaled for the squeeze. Olmos put down a bunt towards the circle, bringing in the runner from third. Two batters later, Rico ripped an RBI single to level the score at three.
White issued a free pass to the first batter she faced in the sixth, and then ran into trouble. EMU elected to re-enter Trujillo, who registered the 100th strikeout of her career while getting the Eagles out of danger. After a strikeout, Trujillo got a pop out for the second out of the inning. Then, with bases loaded, a pitch in the dirt got past Wagner. With UDM's lead runner charging towards the plate, Wagner flipped to Trujillo for the out at the plate to end the Titans' threat.
Staying hot, Lopez doubled to center with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Kriegshauser kept it rolling with a single to the left side, but the UDM shortstop kept the ball in the infield, keeping Lopez from scoring before a fly ball to center put a halt to EMU's rally.
Relying on her defense, Trujillo pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to put the Eagles in position for late game heroics with the heart of the order coming to the plate. Despite a leadoff single by Olmos, EMU could not push across the run, sending the game to extras.
Playing with the international tie breaker rule, the Titans began the eighth with a runner on second. After moving to third, UDM's lead runner came around to score on a single. Detroit sent another runner on the play, but Hostetler's arm came up huge again, allowing Wagner to get another run out at the plate.
Trailing 4-3, Logan was placed on second for the Eagles in the bottom of the eighth. Hostetler moved her to third on a sacrifice bunt, before freshman Sam Isaly (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) drew a pinch hit walk to put runners on the corners with Lopez stepping to the plate. With Lopez on a tear, Detroit decided to intentionally walk EMU's nine-hitter to bring up Kriegshauser. As she has done all season long, Kriegshauser dug in and smoked a walk-off two-run single down the left field line, giving Eastern the 5-4 victory.
The Eagles will take next weekend off and head to California the following weekend, March 9-11, for the Louisville Slugger Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State University.
