Baseball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader to Milwaukee

2/26/2017 10:45:00 PM | Baseball

EMU came out on the wrong end of a pair of pitchers duals

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) –The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came out on the wrong end of a pair of pitchers duals in a doubleheader sweep by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 26, at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven. EMU (2-7) dropped the first contest, 3-0, before falling to the Panthers (3-3) by a 4-2 tally in game two.

Game One: Milwaukee 3, Eastern Michigan 0 (8 inn.)

The Eagles weren't able to generate any run support for a brilliant start from junior Brad Allen (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester (Jackson College)), who took a no decision after going 6.1 scoreless innings, striking out a career-best seven batters and only allowing four hits, all singles.

The bullpen tandem of sophomore Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) and senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) weren't able to keep the shutout intact, as they combined to allow three unearned runs in the eighth inning after a throwing error on a dropped third strike that would have ended the inning.

Offensively, redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) had thee of EMU's four hits, including a double, for his first three-hit game of the season

EMU had a couple golden opportunities to generate runs in the early parts of the game, loading the bases in the first and fourth, but the Panthers were able to escape damage both times, including a double play in the fourth. Meanwhile, Allen was almost untouchable through four, striking out all seven of his batters in the first four frames.

The fifth and sixth were exceptionally quick, with only one base runner reaching in those two innings, leading to a scoreless tie into what could have been the final inning. The Eagles escaped a bases loaded jam of their own in the top of the seventh after a double play turned by redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) and freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Mich.-Knightstown). EMU went quietly in their half of the inning though, leading to extras.

In the top of the eighth, Hester swiftly got the first two batters out, but a single and double put runners on second and third with two outs, summoning Delaplane from the bullpen. The veteran had the third batter out on strikes, but a dropped third strike led to the runner needing to be thrown out at first. The throw down deflected off of the batter, allowing what would end up being the decisive run to cross the plate. Two more runs came across later in the eighth, putting EMU in a 3-0 hole at their final time at the plate. Despite a one-out Mioduszewski double, EMU couldn't break through in the three-run defeat.

Game Two: Milwaukee 4, Eastern Michigan 2

The second game saw another good start from an EMU pitcher as freshman James Harness (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) was saddled with the tough loss after tossing six innings, allowing three earned and striking out five.

The offense was able to push across a couple of runs on five hits, led by an RBI double from freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), as well as two-hit days from sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and freshman Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), who each scored the EMU runs.

Milwaukee was able to push across three of their runs in the first three innings, getting one in the first, second, and third. Meanwhile, EMU continued to get little done at the plate and trailed 3-0 into the sixth.

In the sixth, the Eagles got their first run of the afternoon. Hager notched a one-out single, advancing to third on a failed pickoff attempt. The next batter, Peggs, was able to drive in the run on an RBI groundout.

The seventh didn't produce any offense, but the Panthers were able to get one back in the eighth on two hits, making the score 4-1 into the final turn at bat. In the ninth, a Lubin single led things off, and three batters later, Jones' double brought him home, but it was not enough in the two-run loss.

EMU has one final game left in their Florida spring break trip tomorrow, Feb. 27. The Eagles will face the Panthers with  first pitch set for 10:30 a.m.
