Women's Swimming & Diving Qualifies Nine to MAC Championship Heats

Six Eagles will compete in the championship heat, while three will swim in the consolation finals
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team qualified seven in the prelims session of the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, Feb. 25, in Oxford, Ohio.
Backstroke led the way for the Eagles for the second consecutive day, as the Green and White posted four top-12 ranked times. Freshman Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) paced the strong performance, turning in a fourth-ranked time of 1:57.64, while was also a career-best. Senior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) claimed the fifth-ranked time in prelims, touching in in 1:58.76, while freshman Casey Gavigan's (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) career-best time was the sixth-fastest. Sophomore Erika Guenther (Hudson, Wis.-Hudson) earned a lane in the consolation final, clocking in with a season-best time of 2:01.95, to take the 12th-ranked time into the final session.
Senior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) was the lone Eagle to qualify for the finals in the 100 Freestyle. Coming off a record-setting performance, Wagner turned in a career-best to make it to the consolation final with the 13th-ranked preliminary time.
EMU's breaststroke duo came through in the 200 Breast, posting the fourth and 10th-ranked times. Sophomore Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Halesburg) will enter tonight with the fourth-ranked time, after touching in with a time of 2:14.75, while senior Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) will take part in the consolation final. Worthley clocked in with a time of 2:17.51 in prelims.
The session came to a close in the 200 Butterfly, where senior Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) and sophomore Emilie Desnoyers qualified for the finals with the fourth and fifth-best times, respectively. Jackson touched in with a time of 2:01.45, while Desnoyers' came in with a time of 2:01.59.
The Eagles close out the MAC Championships tonight, at 7 p.m., in Oxford, Ohio.
