GOODYEAR, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University junior Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) posted six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole on the way to a career-low 64 during the opening round of the Loyola Intercollegiate Saturday, Feb. 25, at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
The Dundas, Ontario native was brilliant in his first round, enduring no bogeys on the day. He posted a six-under 30 the front nine and added two more birdies on the back nine. The 64 tied is tied for the lowest score in the storied history of the EMU Golf program and was the lowest mark since Cam Burke posted a 64 in the opening round of the FAU Spring Break Invitational, March 27, 2009. Burke also carded a 64 at the Fossum Invitational, April 22, 2007, while Korey Mahoney was the first Eagle to record the mark at the Big Red Classic, March 8, 2003.
After one round of play, the Eagles lead the event by five shots. As a team, the Eagles finished day one with a 13-under par, 275, to take a five-stroke advantage in the tournament. The next closest squad is UT-Martin who recorded a team score of 280 in the first round.
EMU's 275 is tied for the second-best 18 hole mark in program history, bettered only by a 273 set at the Georgetown Intercollegiate, Oct. 18, 2010. The last time EMU went that low was with a 275 in the opening round of the Windon Memorial, Oct. 17, 2011.
Senior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) was next on the list for Eastern Michigan as he posted a 69, good for a tie for seventh place. Finishing just two strokes behind Rodes, both redshirt senior Jared Multer (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview-Grand Rapids C.C.) and sophomore Beau Breault (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) notched scores of 71, tying them for 22nd, while senior Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) shot a six-over, 78, placing him tied for 88th.
The three-day tournament continues Sunday, Feb. 26, with tee times beginning each day at 7:45 a.m. MT (9:45 a.m. ET). Fans can follow along with live scoring on Golfstat.com.
