Big Inning Dooms Eagles in Loss to Dartmouth
2/25/2017 6:45:00 PM | Baseball
The Eagles couldn't overcome Dartmouth's five-run sixth inning
Eastern was led offensively once again by senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) who had his sixth multi-hit game of the season in a 2-for-4 effort, including a double and his team-leading seventh RBI. Freshman Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) notched his second straight multi-hit effort, getting two singles as well as driving in one.
On the mound, sophomore Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) took a no decision in his second start of the season after pitching five and only giving up one run on four hits with a strikeout. Freshman John Holt (Saline, Mich.-Saline) kept the game within reach in the late innings after pitching 1.1 scoreless frames with just one hit allowed.
The first two innings went by in a flash as the only base runners came on a walk and a single in the top of the second. Dartmouth broke through in the third on an RBI single, making 1-0. That score stood into the fourth after a quick third frame for EMU.
The Eagles were able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a little two-out magic. After a fielding error led to a runner getting to second, Montgomery was there in the clutch for an RBI single to score the tying run, making it 1-1 into the fifth. The fifth frame was another quick one, leading to the busy sixth.
After Feldman was pulled before the sixth because of a high pitch count, the Big Green capitalized on the bullpen, springing for five runs on five hits and an error to race ahead, 6-1, heading to the bottom of the sixth. EMU chipped away slightly in that inning, as a senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) double, followed by an RBI single from sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) made it 6-2.
Following a scoreless seventh, Dartmouth added some insurance in the eighth, springing for two more runs on two hits, putting their lead at 8-2 with two more trips to the plate for the Eagles.
Eastern was able to put one run on the board in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter), and got another in the ninth on the RBI knock from Hager, but EMU couldn't complete the comeback in the four-run loss.
Eastern continues its Florida spring break swing tomorrow, Feb. 26, at the RussMat Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla. The Eagles will face UW-Milwaukee in a doubleheader, with game one starting at 1 p.m.
