Anna Veleva was the only Eagle to get a victory

FULLERTON, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team completed its spring break trip Friday, Feb. 24, when it traveled to Fullerton, Calif. to square off with California State Fullerton. The Eagles (3-9) dropped the doubles point before grabbing one point in singles from the Titans (9-0) and falling 6-1.

Doubles play began with a duo of quick decisions as Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) fell 6-0 at No. 1 before Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) fell, 6-1, in the No. 2 spot.

Unfortunately, singles play was much of the same for the Eagles. Mayerova took Camille de Leon to three sets at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 3-5, 1-0, while Ribero did the same at No. 4. Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) was the only member of the Green and White's lineup to come away with a win. Veleva took set one, 6-3, before Masako Makiba retired in set two, giving the Eagles their lone point of the match.

"Fullerton is one of the better teams we've played this year," state Head Coach Ryan Ray. "They took it to us in doubles. We had three players respond with good singles performances which is encouraging, but again we need to finish in the end."

Eastern Michigan returns to action Saturday, March 11, when it hosts Chicago State University. The Eagles and Cougars will square off at the Chippewa Racquet Club at 1 p.m.
