Eagles Qualifiy a Dozen for Friday Night's MAC Championship Heats

The Green and White posted 18 career-bests
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team turned in another strong performance at the Mid-American Conference Championships in the preliminary session Thursday morning, Feb. 24. Overall, the Green and White turned in 18 career-bests, and qualified 12 Eagles to the championship heats.
Sophomore Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) was the lone Eagle to earn a lane in the 400 Individual Medley championship heat. Swartz clocked in with a career-best time of 4:22.53, taking the fifth-ranked time into the finals heat.
In the 100 Butterfly, sophomore Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin) and senior Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) qualified to Friday night's session. With a career-best time of 54.21, Liberman enters with the fourth-fastest time in prelims. Meanwhile, Jackson will swim in the consolation finals after clocking in with a prelims time of 55.07.
A pair of seniors paced Eastern Michigan in the 200 Freestyle prelims, as Mary Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) and Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas) posted a pair of career-bests. Van Allen was the top finisher for the Green and White, turning in the seventh-best prelims time, while Wagner is set to swim in the consolation finals after touching in with the 11th-ranked prelims time.
EMU's dynamic duo of sophomore Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) and senior Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) qualified for the 100 Breaststroke finals after season-best swims. Duncan, the reigning MAC Champion in the 100 Breast, had the top prelims mark, touching in with a time of 1:00.87. Worthley's time of 1:02.57 ranked sixth, putting two Eagles in the championship heat.
The 100 Backstroke proved to be EMU's top event of the morning, as the Green and White qualified five for the finals. Senior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) led the way, clocking in with a season-best time of 53.94 to post the second-fastest time of the session. Freshmen Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) and Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) also secured lanes in the championship heat, turning in the fifth and eighth-ranked prelims times. In addition to a trio in the championship heat, Liberman and sophomore Erika Guenther (Hudson, Wis.-Hudson) locked up lanes in the consolation finals. Liberman clocked in with a career-best time of 55.38 as the 12th-ranked time, while Guenther is slotted 16th with a career-best time of 55.92.
The 3-meter dive is currently underway and will wrap up with the championship heat this evening, when the Eagles return to action at 7 p.m.
