Eastern (2-4) totaled their best offensive output of the season, getting their 12 runs on 16 hits. Leading the charge once again was senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), who finished with a 2-for-4 day with two RBI's on his first home run of the season, which was a two-run shot. It was the ninth of his career.
Redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) tacked on a 3-for-5 game to match his career high for hits, including a career-best two doubles, as well as a two runs driven in. Fellow fifth-year senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) also had a two-RBI day, including a solo home run, his first of the season and second of his EMU career.
A pair of freshman also notched career milestones, as Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) had his first collegiate RBI's with a two-run double, and Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) had his first career hits and RBI in a 3-for-4 effort.
On the mound, junior Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) earned his second straight win after going five strong, only allowing two runs on four hits while striking out three. The bullpen was solid overall, as junior Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shasta (Butte C.C.)) and sophomore Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) teamed up to pitch three innings, only allowing one unearned run in relief of Mattson. Senior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) also struck out the only batter he faced, which was the final batter of the game.
Eastern was quick to jump all over the Bonnies (0-1) in the first inning, going for six runs on four hits. It started with a leadoff walk, followed by a hit by pitch and single to load up the bases. Peterson then wore one to get the hard-earned RBI and the 1-0 lead. Following that was an infield single from Gill to make it 2-0, quickly followed by a two-RBI double from Owings to spring ahead 4-0.
The Eagles continued to pour it on with a sacrifice fly from freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) and an RBI single from Hager to make it 6-0 after just one inning of play.
Mattson breezed through the second, setting up another fruitful inning for EMU in the bottom half. With two outs, redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) singled, setting up the two-run bomb from Montgomery to make it an 8-0 advantage after just two innings.
SBU got on the board in the third after a leadoff double turned into a run later in the inning on a wild pitch. EMU got the run back and more in the third however, as the bases loaded up once again on two singles and a walk, setting up junior Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) to come through with a huge two-RBI single to make the score 10-1 after three.
The Bonnies tacked on another in the fourth when a leadoff walk came around on a double, but the Eagles had the answer right away again in the bottom half of the fourth on Peterson's solo shot. After four, the lead remained at nine in favor of EMU.
Both teams went quietly in the fifth and sixth, before SBU got another run in the seventh on a fielding error to close the deficit to 11-3. Hester pitched a quick, clean, top of the eighth to keep things steady into the bottom half of the frame. There, Gill knocked in EMU's final run on an RBI double, his second on the night, to make it 12-3 into the final inning.
In the ninth, the Bonnies made a bit of a comeback after three runs came across following two errors and a three-run home run, making the score 12-6. Three more singles drove in another run, before Delaplane was summoned from the pen to try and get the final out. He struck out the lone batter he faced to preserve the 12-7 victory.
Eastern gets back into action tomorrow morning for a Saturday matinee game against Dartmouth College. First pitch from Port Charlotte is set for 11 a.m.
