Eight Eagles Qualify for Championship Heats

The Eagles turned in 15 career-bests
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team qualified eight for the championship heats Thursday morning, Feb. 23, at the Mid-American Conference Championships in Oxford, Ohio. The morning session included 15 career-bests.
Junior Sarah Dombkowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) and sophomore Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) fueled the Eagles in the preliminary races for the 500 freestyle, as each Eagle turned in a career-best. Dombkowski was the top finisher for the Green and White, clocking in with a career-best of 4:50.39, to rank third ahead of Thursday night's finals heat. Swartz also qualified for the championship heat, posting a career-best time of 4:50.70, the fifth-best time in prelims. Dombkowski dropped nearly five seconds off her previous career-best, while Swartz's time was six seconds faster than her previous best. Senior Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) also placed in the top-16 for EMU, posting the 15th-fastest time in prelims to earn a lane in the 'B' final.
Two more Eagles qualified for championship heats in the 200 Individual Medley. Senior Mary Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) paced the Eagles, touching in with a season-best time of 2:02.68 to take the eighth-ranked time into the finals heat. Freshman Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) earned a spot in the consolation finals after clocking in with a career-best time of 2:04.08.
Highlighted by eight career-bests, Eastern Michigan saw three swimmers earn lanes in the championship heats. Senior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) led the way, clocking in with a career-best time of 22.58. Behind Wagner's third-ranked time, junior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.-Landstown) and senior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) claimed lanes in the 'B' final. Walker enters the final session of the day with the 12th-best time, while Mitcheltree is ranked 15th after prelims.
Prelims for the 1-meter dive are currently underway, while championship heats will begin at 7 p.m.
