The Eagles struggled versus the Aztecs
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback Wednesday, Feb. 22, when it traveled to San Diego State University. The Eagles (3-8) took three singles matches to three sets but the Aztecs (4-6) were able to out-duel EMU in the sweep.
In doubles play, both the No. 1 and No. 3 matches were decided by a 6-3 tally in favor of the Aztecs, giving SDSU a 1-0 lead quickly. Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) were leading 5-4 at No. 2 doubles when the point was decided, leaving their match unfinished.
Moving on to singles play, three matches were decided in two sets. At No. 1 singles, Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) was one of three Eagles to take their match to a third set. Mayerova dropped set one 6-3 to Jana Buth, before taking the second frame 6-2, but ultimately fell in a third set tiebreaker, 7-6. Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) each went to three sets as well but ultimately fell in third set tiebreakers as well.
"This is the type of match that stings to lose 7-0," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We played better singles today, we just can't lose three set matches. It was too competitive to fall short in all of them. We need more discipline and focus in that area."
The Eagles take a day off to travel to Fullerton, Calif. on Friday, Feb. 24. Eastern Michigan will take the court versus Cal State Fullerton at 1:30 p.m. PT on Friday afternoon.
