Eagles Begin Action-Packed Week with Meet Against Towson

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team begins an action-packed week Monday, Feb. 20, with a home meet against the Towson Tigers. The Eagles look to defeat the Tigers on Monday before playing host to Mid-American Conference rival Ball State later in the week, Friday, Feb. 24.
Following the Meet: The meet can be followed from home through both live results, as well as a live stream. The live stream, which costs $6.95, and the live results link can be found on the gymnastics schedule page on EMUEagles.com.
Scouting the Competition: The Tigers enter the meet No. 39 in the country according to the most recent rankings (Feb. 13), holding an average team-score of 194.296 and a season-best 195.025. The Tigers' best event of the year has been beam, where they come in at No. 26 with an average event score of 48.654 and a season-high of 48.975. The team is also near the top-30 on floor, sitting at No. 32 with an average floor score of 48.842 and a season-best of 49.100.
Towson has four student-athletes who have competed all-around this season, with Gabriella Yarussi turning in the team's best all-around score of the year at 39.350. Yarussi's best event is beam, where she has scored a 9.90, while she has also notched a 9.875 on floor. Mary Elle Arduino has also been impressive on beam, earning a season-high 9.90 as well. Finally, the team's second best all-arounder, Tyra McKellar, has also posted a 9.875 on floor.
Last Time Against the Tigers: EMU most recently met Towson last season in the team's season-opening quad meet at Pittsburgh, Jan. 10. There, the Eagles defeated the Tigers by a final tally of 194.875 - 192.775.
Individually, Kendall Valentin had an excellent day, notching a then career-best 9.875 on vault, along with a 9.85 on bars and a then personal-best 9.85 on beam. Additionally, both Catie Conrad and Rachel Slocum also notched a career-high 9.85 on vault
Conrad continued her strong day with a 9.825 on bars, as well as a then personal-best 9.825 on beam. She also made her debut on floor, scoring a 9.55 securing an all-around score of 39.050.
Rubin on a Tear: Since beginning the season with a hiccup on beam against Kentucky, Lacey Rubin has been dominating for the Eagles. In fact, since the team's meet at Central Michigan, Jan. 20, every one of Rubin's scores has been a 9.80 or better. So far this year, the senior has season-best scores of 9.90 on bars, which ties her career-best, and a 9.875 on beam, which is just shy of her personal-best.
Conrad Named MAC Gymnast of the Week: For her strong performance against Kent State, Feb. 10, Catie Conrad was named the MAC Gymnast of the Week for the first time in her career.
Conrad competed all-around for the first time this season, finishing with a 39.175, which tied for first-place at the meet. Specifically, she had fantastic routines on bars, scoring a 9.875, as well as beam, where she notched a career-high 9.90.
Switch to RQS: Beginning Monday, Feb. 20, rankings will be determined utilizing the Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) formula. Qualification for regional competition is based on a team's six best regular-season-meet scores, of which three must be away. To obtain the regional qualifying score (RQS), the high score is eliminated and the remaining five scores are averaged.
Past the Halfway Point: The Eagles have now competed in seven meets this season, and have just four more regular season matchups. As of the most recent rankings (Feb. 13), Eastern remains the top-ranked team in the MAC, but Kent State, Ball State, and NIU all remain within four tenths of the Green and White's average team score of 194.733. When it comes to individual events, EMU leads the conference on bars, while sitting second on beam and fifth on vault and floor.
Catie Conrad is currently the MAC's top-ranked all-arounder at a 39.175 average with one all-around meet under her belt, while Kendall Valentin holds the top-spot on bars. Conrad and Lacey Rubin also sit in the top-five on bars at third and fifth, respectively.

Conrad finished with a 39.175, highlighted by a career-best 9.90 on beam and a 9.875 on bars. The Brighton, Mich. native's lone all-around score of the season puts her at No. 39 in the national rankings.

EMU in the National Rankings: The Eagles rose to No. 29 in the rankings after the victory over Kent State, as the team now maintains an average team score of 194.733 and a season-high of 195.925 in the most recent rankings (Feb. 13). Bars continues to be the team's best event, as they remain in the top-10 at No. 7 with an average score of 49.100 and a season-best of 49.250. The Green and White also hold a top-40 spot on beam, sitting at No. 37 with an average event score of 49.429 and a season-high of 49.000,

At CMU, the Eagles notched a 48.950, which tied for the 10th-best beam total in program history, and a 48.975 at WMU, tying the ninth-best beam score in the record books. Two weeks ago, the Eagles scored a 49.0 on beam against KSU, Feb. 10, marking the ninth-best beam total in program history.
Consistency from Conrad and McEachern: Through the first seven meets of the season, Catie Conrad and Sydney McEachern have been incredibly consistent for the Eagles. In total, the pair have competed a total of 40 routines, posting 39 hit routines. Conrad has already posted seven scores of 9.8 or better on bars, including a big 9.9 at WMU, as well as four scores of 9.75 or better on beam, highlighted by a career-high 9.9 against Kent State. McEachern has been one of the team's leader on floor, notching a 9.825 in Kalamazoo, as well as a season-best 9.875 against the Golden Flashes.
Last Time Out: The Eagles traveled to DeKalb, Ill. for a Friday bout with Northern Illinois, Feb. 17. Despite finishing with two event titles, the Green and White ended up on the wrong side of the win-loss ledger, as the Huskies escaped with the 195.525 - 195.325 victory.

Eagles Welcome Ella Dover: The Eagles, in unison with Team IMPACT, announced Thursday, Dec. 8, that the team signed 10-year old Ella Dover to a ceremonial letter of commitment to join the team for the next few years.
Ella suffers from chronic epilepsy and has multiple seizures daily. This, however, does not have an impact on her attitude, as she is always smiling and approaching life with a positive mentality. Ella will be a regular at practices and meets, and will also join the Green and White for team activities and events throughout the year. In fact, Ella was in attendance for the team's season opener against Kentucky, in addition to making the trip to Kalamazoo for the WMU meet.
Looking Ahead: The Eagles are back at it again later this week, hosting MAC rival Ball State, Friday, Feb. 24, in the Convocation Center, which can be viewed on ESPN3. Eastern then has its final road trip of the year, heading to Morgantown, W. Va. for a quad-meet hosted by West Virginia, March 5.
