Eagles Power to Sweep of Robert Morris and Siena

2/18/2017 5:43:00 PM | Softball

The Eagles are 3-1 to start the season for the first time since 2009

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's softball team's bats were alive and well on day two of the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational, powering the Eagles to wins over Siena College and Robert Morris University. The Eagles (3-1) used a walk-off walk to top Siena, 10-9, before soaring past RMU (1-7), 11-1, in five innings to move to 3-1 on the season. The Green and White's four-game record is its best to start to the year since 2009.

Game #1: Eastern Michigan 10, Siena 9

Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) paced Eastern at the plate, finishing the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a game-winning walk. Sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) also turned in a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Meanwhile, junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) struck out four over 4.1 innings en route to the win.

A first inning home run put the Saints in front early, but the Eagles came right back to even the score through one. Freshman Danielle Rico (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Grand Terrace) put down a bunt, bringing in Kriegshauser from third.

EMU tacked on four more in the second as the bats continued to heat up. A one out double down the left field line by junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) started Eastern's big inning and brought freshman Arianna Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) to the plate. Chretien reached on a fielder's choice, before sophomore Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) drove in Hostetler. Getting caught in a pickle between third and home, Hostetler outlasted the Saints and slid in safely. An RBI single by Kriegshauser followed it up and was the first of three consecutive hits for the Eagles, as sophomore Lucy Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif.-Stockdale) and Rico added RBI knocks to push EMU's lead to 5-1 through two innings.

Siena scored four runs over the next two innings to level the score at five ahead of the bottom of the fourth.

Digging into the batter's box as a pinch hitter, junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) delivered with an RBI single to put the Green and White back in front, 6-5. Kriegshauser came in on a wild pitch to double EMU's lead shortly thereafter.

An RBI double and a solo home run by the Saints in the sixth tied the score at seven and set the Eagles up for a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.

Akles ripped a first pitch single to right before being lifted for a pinch runner. Senior Katy Wyman (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Portage Central) made the most of her appearance on the base paths, scooting into third on a double by sophomore Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview). Senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) then reached on an error, setting up Kriegshauser for the walk-off. With one out and the bases loaded, Kriegshauser worked her way to a walk-off walk to give the Eagles the win, 10-9.

Game #2: Eastern Michigan 11, Robert Morris 1 (5 inn.)

EMU's bats remained red hot in its second game, as the Eagles pounded out 10 hits. Wagner led the way, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Logan and Chretien added two hits apiece.

In the circle, freshman Savanah White (Visalia, Calif.-Redwood) and senior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) split the work. White went 2.1 innings, striking out one, while Minsker earned the win. Minsker tossed 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out two.

Heading into the second inning with the game scoreless, the Eagles jumped all over RMU. Akles and Wagner walked, and Logan singled, loading the bases for Chretien. Stepping to the plate with one out, Chretien rocketed a bases-clearing double to the fence, giving Eastern a 3-0 edge.

The Green and White added six runs on four hits and three errors in the third inning. Kriegshauser sparked the Eagles with a leadoff single and Wagner reached on an error to bring Akles to the plate. Down in the count 0-1, Akles blasted the second pitch to straight away center, pushing EMU's lead to 6-0. The Eagles added a run on an error and junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) chipped in a two-run double to give Eastern a 9-0 advantage midway through the third.

Robert Morris got one back in the bottom half, but it did little to slow the Eagles as a two-run single off the bat of Wagner sealed the 11-1 run-rule victory for the Green and White.

Eastern closes out opening weekend tomorrow, Feb. 19, with games against Quinnipiac University and the University of North Dakota.
