– The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the University of Missouri, Saturday, Feb. 18, at City of Palms Park. The Eagles (1-2) were overpowered in game one before dropping a heartbreaker to the Tigers (2-1) in game two on a walk off.

Game One: Missouri 27, Eastern Michigan 9

Despite the final tally, EMU put together another solid offensive performance in game one. The Eagles totaled 11 hits, with four players notching two-hit games. Senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) and junior Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) both had doubles for one of their two hits.

Sophomore John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) also had a couple RBI's after making his season debut as a pinch hitter, while freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown) had the first multi-hit game of his career in a 2-for-2 effort.

The Eagles were all over the Tigers in the first inning, striking for three runs. Williams got things started with a one-out single, followed by a fielding error to put runners on the corners. Montgomery knocked in Williams with a base hit to lead 1-0.

A balk brought the second runner around and placed Montgomery at second. Redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.- Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) brought him home with his first hit and RBI of the season, and EMU had the early three-run lead.

Missouri had the immediate response though, tagging Eastern for five runs on three hits and an error to leap ahead, 5-3, after just one inning. The second inning was quick on both sides, leading to a busy third.

Eastern had a little two-out magic in the inning, as Montgomery stayed hot, just missing a home run on a double to right center. Immediately following that, Peterson chopped a ball up the middle that was cut off by the second baseman, and a wild throw to first was able to score Montgomery, getting EMU within one.

The one-run deficit was short lived though, as Missouri sprung for three more runs in the bottom of the  third to put the lead up to four, 8-4, after three innings. MU broke the game open over the next three innings, going for 16 combined runs to take the commanding 24-4 advantage into the seventh.

EMU got off the skid in the top of the seventh, with four more runs. The bases were juiced with no outs and redshirt senior Mike Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) drew a walk for an RBI. Following that was an RBI groundout for Rensel Jr., and then an RBI single from sophomore Drake Lubin (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern). One more run came around on a throwing error by Mizzou later in the frame to make it 24-8 into the stretch.

Another run was manufactured for the Eagles in the eighth. A single and walk put runners on first and second for Rensel Jr., who came through with his second RBI on his first hit of the season, a single up the middle. Missouri got the run back plus more in the bottom of the eighth to finish off the 27-9 defeat.

Game Two: Missouri 6, Eastern Michigan 5

Game two was a tighter battle, with the EMU bullpen shutting down the Tigers to maintain a one run lead before the rally in the ninth inning. Three relief pitchers combined to toss five straight scoreless innings for Eastern.

Senior Justin Thompson (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth (Concordia)), sophomore Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma), and senior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) teamed up to blank the Tigers from the fourth inning into the ninth before Mizzou rallied for a pair of unearned runs to take the win. Hester had three strikeouts to match his career-high.

Offensively, EMU capitalized on six MU errors, only getting two RBI's in the contest. Montgomery had another two-hit game, including a double, while redshirt senior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) also had a two-bagger in his 2-for-5 day. Freshman Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) notched the first two hits of his college career as well.

Eastern scored in the first inning once again, capitalizing on a Tiger miscue. Peggs drew a one-out walk, and later advanced to third on a wild pitch and errant subsequent throw down to second. He would be singled home by Mioduszewski, and EMU led, 1-0, after the first turn at the dish.

The Eagles tacked on another in the second thanks to a MU error.  With the bases loaded, a slow roller to short was booted, allowing a runner to score, extending EMU's lead to 2-0. The Tigers were able to answer back though, getting a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to tie it after two.

Two more Tiger errors led to EMU gaining the lead back in the third inning. Williams got things started with a walk, and Montgomery cranked his second double of the day to put runners on second and third. Williams would then score on a failed pickoff attempt to second that sailed into center, allowing Williams to waltz home. Later in the frame, on a groundball to second, the throw to first was offline, and Montgomery scored, giving EMU the two-run lead back.

Missouri had the answer yet again in the bottom of the third, tying the game at four with two runs on three hits, keeping the deadlock into the fourth.

The back and forth game continued in the fourth inning, as the Eagles loaded up the bags with no outs to begin the inning. A runner was driven home by Williams on a sacrifice fly, giving EMU the lead back, 5-4. Thompson allowed a pair of runners to reach in the bottom of the fourth, but ultimately was able to maintain the lead into the fifth inning.

Thompson and Hester were then able to temper the Tiger bats over the next three innings, including Hester going 2.2 scoreless frames, to keep the one-run advantage into the bottom of the eighth. Beaton went 1-2-3 in that inning to set up the ninth.

Eastern got runners into scoring position in the top of the inning, but couldn't add any insurance, keeping the one-run lead into the final go around. That's where Missouri was able to finally rally back for the final time, getting its first run on a throwing error that tied the game, and placed a runner on third. One batter later, a sacrifice fly sealed the deal for the 6-5 defeat.

Eastern has one last game against the Tigers tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 19. The Eagles will look to tie the series against the SEC opponent with first pitch at 11 a.m.
