Eastern Michigan University's tennis team defeated the University of Northwestern Ohio Friday afternoon, Feb. 17. The Eagles (3-6) took the doubles point from the NAIA nationally ranked No. 11 Racers (2-3) before winning five of the singles contests on their way to a 6-1 win at the Chippewa Racquet Club.

Beginning with doubles, the No. 3 duo of juniors Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) cruised to a quick 6-0 decision before junior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and redshirt junior Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) defeated Vladica Djudjevic and Raquel Marques, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles to secure a 1-0 lead for the Green and White. The Racers' No. 1 doubles squad of Amanda Schneider and Alisa Reshetnikova is ranked No. 7 nationally in the NAIA and defeated sophomore Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and junior Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School), 6-4.

With the 1-0 advantage heading into doubles play, Veleva picked up right where she left off. The Sofia, Bulgaria native notched a dominant, 6-0, 6-2, win at No. 5 singles, giving EMU a 2-0 edge. Ribero added to the lead by defeating Marques by the same tally, 6-0, 6-2 in the fourth spot. Barcelo grabbed the team victory with a 6-1, 6-3, win over UNOH's Whitney Vispoel at No. 6. In the No. 3 spot, Martinovska was able to defeat Djudjevic, 6-3, 6-4, before Gogvadze completed play, defeating the No. 28 ranked singles player in NAIA, Reshetnikova, 6-4, 7-6. Mayerova did fall at No. 1 to the fifth ranked singles player in the country, Schneider, 6-2, 6-1.

"Solid effort today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "UNOH has some good player at the top that pushed us today. Overall it's a decent win. Now we can focus on outdoor tennis in California next week."

The Eagles return to action next week, Feb. 21-24, when they travel to the Golden State for three matches in California. Eastern will take on UC San Diego Tuesday, Feb. 21, before traveling to San Diego State, Feb. 22. The Green and White will close out the road trip with a match at Cal State Fullerton Friday, Feb. 24.
