The Eagles won their first season opener since 2014
Game #1: Eastern Michigan 7, Boston 6
Boston used a one-out triple to gain an early edge, but Eastern came right back with a run in the bottom half of the opening frame. Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincolnway North) earned a free pass to lead things off, before coming around to score on a passed ball.
Trailing 2-1 into the bottom of the second, the Eagles' bats came alive. Sophomore Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) broke the inning open with a single, and junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) followed suit with a single of her own. A wild pitch and an error by the Terriers brought both across the plate, putting the Green and White in front, 3-2, before another miscue extended EMU's lead to 4-2.
BU used a pair of homers and a sacrifice fly to regain the lead, 6-4, through five, at which point junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) shut the Terriers down. Entering in relief, Trujillo struck out three over her 3.0 innings of work to earn the win. After yielding a leadoff triple in the seventh, Trujillo settled in and struck out the next two batters to escape unscathed.
Trujillo's work in the circle set the Eagles up for a thrilling final frame. Junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) singled up the middle and was lifted for sophomore speedster Alex Peters (Oscoda, Mich.-Alpena). Peters scooted into second on a ground out. Hostetler then drew a free pass, setting up freshman Samantha Isaly (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) up for an RBI single. The Dublin, Ohio native stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and roped a single up the middle, scoring Peters from third. Hostetler slid home safely on a passed ball, evening the score at six as the lineup turned over to the top. Kriegshauser dug into the right handed batters box and worked to a full count with two outs. Down to the Eagles' final strike, Kriegshauser ripped a single through the infield to bring in the game-winning run.
Game #2: Eastern Michigan 0, Villanova 1
Freshman Savannah White (Visalia, Calif.-Redwood) earned the nod in EMU's second game, making her Eagle debut in the circle. White went 3.1 innings, giving up one hit, but walks cut her day short. Running into trouble in the fourth inning, White loaded the bases with one out, ending her day. Senior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) made her first appearance of the season, going 3.2 innings in relief. Inheriting bases loaded with one out, Minsker bounced back from a run-scoring walk to keep the Wildcats at bay.
Despite a solid showing by Minkser, EMU's bats mustered just two hits split amongst sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) and Lucy Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif.-Stockdale).
The Green and White return to action tomorrow, Feb. 18, with games against Siena and Robert Morris. EMU's game against Siena is set for 9 a.m., while the Eagles' game with RMU will take place after.
