The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team was tied going into halftime, but faded in the second half in a 79-71 defeat to Ohio University Tuesday night, Feb. 14, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles (13-13, 5-8 MAC) cut the lead to four within the final minute of play, but clutch free throw shooting from the Bobcats (16-8, 8-5 MAC) sealed the game.

As a team, the Green and White finished 23-of-67 (34.3 percent) from the field, also sinking eight three-pointers to match the Bobcats. EMU forced 18 turnovers from Ohio, turning them into 10 steals and 11 points off turnovers. Eastern and Ohio each notched 22 points in the paint, with EMU also winning the second chance battle, 17-10.

Senior Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) led the Eagles in scoring with 19 points, including five three-pointers and four rebounds. Fellow senior Ty Toney (Atlanta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands College)) also had a solid offensive game with 16 points and a trio of long balls, as well as three boards and two steals. Finally, sophomore James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) notched his 14th double-double of the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The double-double was also the 33rd of his career, tying him with E-Club Hall of Fame and former MAC Player of the Year, Grant Long, for fourth in career double-doubles at EMU.

The Bobcats came out hot on the offensive end, forcing an early EMU timeout with the score standing at 8-3 Ohio. Thompson led the Eagles in the early goings, posting six points and three rebounds in the opening six minutes. OU continued attacking, opening an eight-point lead, 15-7, before Madray sunk a solid mid-range jumper to cut the lead to six.

The Green and White built off the momentum, as Toney drove the lane and sunk the layup to make it a four-point game, 15-11, at the 11-minute mark. The scoring slowed down for roughly two minutes before Bond converted a pair of free throws to tack on two more for Eastern. After another long ball from Ohio, Toney converted one of his own, keeping the OU lead at two, 18-16.

EMU then tied it up with a pair of free throws from Thompson, giving him eight points through 15 minutes of play. That tie was short lived, however, as the Bobcats drained another long ball to put Ohio back in front by three, 21-18. After a Nobles free throw, OU sunk its sixth three of the game to push the Bobcats back in front by five, 24-19.

After a steal from Thompson, the Baton Rouge, La. native fired a pass to redshirt senior Ray Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus), who took it to the hoop and got EMU back within three, 24-21. Thompson continued his strong game, sinking two from the charity stripe to make it a one-point game as the half came to a close. Toney ended the half with a clutch buzzer beater from downtown, making it a tie game at half, 26-26.

Redshirt sophomore Jordan Nobles (Canton, Mich.-Canton) broke the tie on EMU's first offensive possession of the second half, downing a mid-range jumper to put the Green and White ahead by two. Like the first half, that lead did not last long, as Ohio converted a three-point play on the other end to put the Bobcats back in front by one. Mangum tied the score once again at 31, but Ohio came right back to retake the lead.

The Bobcats pushed the lead to four, 35-31, before Thompson scored his 12th  point of the game and notched his 10th rebound to give him his 14th double-double of the season. Eastern kept the score close with another Mangum three, but Ohio was in front by one, 37-36, at the 15:14 mark. Coming out of the media timeout, Ohio tacked on another basket, but Thompson responded with his fifth field goal to keep the lead at one.

Eastern tied the game for the sixth time on a pair of free throws, making it 40-40 with less than 14 minutes to play. The back and forth play continued, as Ohio grabbed the lead for a possession, but Eastern evened it up again at 42 apiece. With 11:45 to go, the teams remained knotted up at 44. The Bobcats broke the lead with their seventh long ball of the game, putting the score at 47-44 as the 10-minute mark approached.

Ohio was able to break the back and forth trend, opening a four-point lead, 51-47, after a pair of layups. From there, the Eagles kept it close, pulling within one on multiple occasions, but could not retake the lead. The Bobcats then pushed it to six, 59-53, forcing an Eagles timeout with 4:56 left in the game. With the momentum behind them, OU increased the lead to eleven, 64-53, as the clock continued to tick away.

With the Green and White facing a 12-point deficit with three-minutes to go, EMU needed to score in a hurry. Lee and Mangum kept it within 10 at the 1:29 mark, but made free throws from Ohio preserved the lead. Nobles then cut it to single digits, 71-63, on a layup, but just 46 seconds remained. After two free throws from the Bobcats, Toney and Mangum sunk back-to-back threes to make it just a four-point game, 73-69.  Following two more from the charity stripe, Nobles sunk a quick layup to keep the lead at four, but the Eagles could not muster any more points, eventually falling 79-71.

Eastern hits the road on Saturday, Feb. 18, heading west to in-state rival Western Michigan for a 4 p.m. bout with the Broncos in University Arena.
