Eagles Finish Third at GVSU Big Meet in Allendale

ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team competed at the GVSU Big Meet today, Feb. 10, securing a third-place finish with 42 points. Eastern had 13 career-bests on the day, and finished with a total of eight top-five placings.
Over in Allendale, junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio – Hudson) had a strong day in the 60m dash invite, punching his ticket to the finals after taking ninth with a time of 6.99 seconds. In the finals, he improved upon his placing by four spots, taking home fifth in 6.93 seconds.
In the 200m dash invite, junior Brandon Bolden (Solon, Ohio – Solon) and freshman Sean Beckom (Saginaw, Mich. – Heritage) each represented EMU. Bolden finished 20th with a time of 22.44 seconds, while Beckom was 29th in 22.64 seconds.
Sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. – Clinton) ran a strong 400m dash, clocking in at a career-best 48.13 seconds to take the silver. Fellow sophomore Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio – Eastmoor Academy) also ran in the event, nabbing a personal-best with a time of 50.17 seconds. All four runners in the 800m dash posted career-best marks, with junior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich. – Thomas J. Anderson) leading the way with an 18th-place finish in 1:53.87. Just behind him was freshman Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga. – Blanche Ely), who secured 19th in 1:53.95.
Redshirt junior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland – Mountain Ridge) broke yet another Icelandic record, this time in the mile. Andresson brought home fourth-place in the race, posting a career-best time of 4:05.78. In the 3000m run, redshirt junior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) secured another fourth-place finish for EMU, clocking in with a personal-best time of 8:10.70. Rounding out the distance events was redshirt junior Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio – Defiance), who ran in the 5000m and took 14th with a career-best time of 14:38.79.
Freshman Ivan Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y. – Westland) had a career day in the 60m hurdles invite, earning a spot in the finals after clocking in with a personal-best time of 8.17 seconds to take sixth. In the finals, Suazo improved his placing, nabbing fifth with a time of 8.19 seconds. In the high jump invite, sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) brought home the gold, finishing atop the podium with a jump of 2.10 meters/ 6 feet 10.75-inches.
Fellow sophomore Micah Peters (York, Ontario – Vaughn Road Academy) secured another top-three finish for the Eagles in the triple jump invite, taking the bronze with a jump of 14.27 meters/ 46 feet 10-inches. Freshman Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio – Edgerton) brought home a third-place finish in the pole vault, notching a career-best mark of 4.81 meters/ 15 feet 9.25-inches to secure the bronze.
Redshirt sophomore Austin Hazek (Medina, Ohio – Medina) had a career day in the weight throw, finishing eighth with a personal-best mark of 16.62 meters/ 54 feet 6.5-inches. In the shot put, freshman Jannik Schmitt (Plymouth, Mich. – Salem) turned in a ninth-place finish, notching a throw of 15.09 meters/ 49 feet 6.25-inches. Just two spots behind him, redshirt sophomore Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. – Avondale) finished 11th with a launch of 14.83 meters/ 48 feet 8-inches.
Tomorrow, redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio – Maumee) will run in the 3000m at the Husky Classic out in Seattle, Wash. Action from the west coast is slated to begin at 10 a.m. PT with the women's pole vault and the women's 60m hurdles prelims.
