Streeter named a lifetime honorary members by the organization
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Former Eastern Michigan University Sports Information Director Jim Streeter was recently bestowed the highest individual membership honor by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association (DSBA), the organization announced Feb. 3. In addition to Streeter, Tom Ryan, Nick Vista, Richard Wilson, and Bill Wischman also received the esteemed distinction.
The DSBA was founded in the fall of 1948 by Ty Tyson and other sports announcers in metropolitan Detroit. Tyson and others were disenchanted with what they perceived as 'second class citizenship' in the press box at then-Briggs Stadium. Sports broadcasters, sports writers, sports photographers, P.A. announcers, sports public/media relations/SIDs, sports marketing professionals, Athletic Directors, as well as student electronic journalists from high schools and colleges, comprise the DSBA.
"Streets" – as he was known to students and coworkers - graduated from EMU in 1973 with a degree in physical education and minors in journalism and history. His passion for athletics and interest in journalism led him to the Eastern Echo, where he served as sports editor for two years. After graduating, he joined the Ypsilanti Press as a sports writer before returning to EMU as assistant sports information director in 1974. He was named Sports Information Director in 1975, overseeing publicity for 21 varsity sports, as well as playing a key role in the development and maintenance of the athletics department's archives. He was inducted into the University's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
Streeter was a member of the College of Sports Information Directors Of America (CoSIDA) and served on the publications committee for four years. He was the secretary of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters and Writers Association from 1990-94 after serving as vice president for one year, and was honored with the organization's "Best of the Best" award in 2007. He was one of nine media marshals selected for the 2004 Ryder Cup golf competition at Oakland Hills Country Club and was part of the media relations staff at the 2008 NCAA men's basketball regional and the 2009 Final Four in Detroit.
In March of 2015, EMU Athletics renamed his former office inside the Convocation Center to the The Jim Streeter Media Relations Office. The dedication was made possible by private donations to the James L. Streeter Media Center Fund, administered by the EMU Foundation. Additional contributions to this fund are still put toward technology and other upgrades to further the publicity efforts of Eastern Michigan Athletics.
