YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University Women's Track and Field Head Coach Sue Parks announced seniors Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area), Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison), and Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian), as well as junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) were voted team captains for the 2017-18 season, Friday, Dec. 8. This serves as the second straight season Jones and McDermitt act as team captains, and the first for Pollatz and Meyers.
"These four student-athletes are great choices to lead our team," Parks said. "Not only do they lead by example, they use they their voices to inspire their teammates to get better. They are great representatives of our program and of Eastern Michigan University."
Jones will look to continue her incredible career at EMU throughout the 2017-18 campaign. In the first meet of the season, Dec. 1, Jones marked personal bests in the 60 and 300m dash, claiming first with times of 7.55 and 39.17, respectively. Last year, the Greensburg, Pa. native placed first in the 200m at the indoor MAC Championships, then swept each event she participated in the outdoor championships, taking gold in the 4x100, 200m, and 400m while setting career-highs in both the 200m and 400m.
McDermitt finished last season placing sixth in the indoor NCAA Championships with a then program-record of 15:43.95 in the 5000m, earning First Team All-American honors as just the eighth Eagle to do so. She later qualified to the outdoor national championship, where she placed 21st in the 10,000m, garnering Honorable Mention All-American honors. Additionally, the Davison, Mich. native finished either at or near the top of the podium in every event she participated in at both the indoor and outdoor MAC Championships. McDermitt won silver in the 3000m, bronze in the 5000m, and finished fourth in the mile at the indoor event, before taking first place in the 10,000m and third in the 5,000m at the outdoor championships.
Pollatz only competed in three meets last year, one of which being the indoor MAC Championship where she took home bronze with a mark of 3.97m in the pole vault. However, before last year Pollatz posted a pair of top-six finishes at the 2015-16 indoor conference championship, qualified and finished 39th in pole vault at the NCAA East Regional in the outdoor portion of the same season, and earned third place in the pole vault at the 2014-15 outdoor MAC Championship,
One of four Eagles to garner First Team All-MAC honors in last year's indoor championships, Meyers took home gold in the 3000m and was a pivotal piece in the distance medley relay team taking first place in the indoor competition. Additionally, she competed in the outdoor NCAA Preliminaries after taking fourth in the 1500m and sixth in the 5000m at the outdoor MAC Championship.
The four will look to lead their team to its first MAC Championship since the 2015-16 season, when they captured both the indoor and outdoor titles.
