The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team finished in first place at the EMU Invitational for the fifth consecutive year Saturday, Dec. 2, with a number of season-best performances and a new 800 freestyle relay meet-record. The Eagles compiled a total of 1,268.5 points to come away as the top team, cruising past Ball State University (770), Wayne State University (685), Albion College (402) and Tiffin University (228.5).

After breaking two-records on Friday, the Eagles added another one to the total, this time in the 800 frees relay. Sophomores Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) and Alex Arrieta (Miami, Fla.-Doral Academy Center) teamed up with senior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), and junior Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) to clock a new meet record of 6:39.59, beating the previous record set by a Michigan cohort in 2002 by a full second.

A pair of top-three finishes in the 200 medley relay continued to expand the Eagles lead. Burton and fellow senior Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sandford) teamed up with freshmen Ben Brooks (Avon, Ohio-Avon) and Ben Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa.-State College Area) to take first-place with a time of 1:30.79. Coming in third was junior Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary), Tyson, sophomore Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev), and freshman Alec Hoch (Orchard Park, N.Y.-Orchard Park).

Competing in the 400 individual medley for the first time this season, the Eagles placed sophomore Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) in the top-three. Saladin finished the event in second after turning in a time of 4:05.16.

Moving to the 100 butterfly, Burton fueled the Eagles to another event win. The Chesapeake, Va. native retained his perfect mark for the season, going five-for-five, thanks to a season-best time of 48.59.

Eastern had its first sweep of the day in the 200 free as a group of veterans led the way with season-best marks. Tyson wrapped up a first-place finish at 1:39.92, while Arrieta and junior JF Murphy (Montreal, Quebec-Sainte-Anne) took second and third, respectively.

In the 200 breaststroke, the Green and White nabbed three of the top-five spots in the neck-and-neck race. Tsenkov used a season-best time of 57.18 to take second, while Gingher and Brooks followed right behind at 57.29 and 57.61 for third and fourth, respectively.

Eastern saw the same placing in the 100 backstroke, except this time, it was Kawaguchi who took second for EMU with a season-best time of 49.10. Burton and Segal were right on his heels to take third and fourth.

After a 1-2 punch in the 800 free relay, the Eagles concluded the diving portion of the two-day meet on the 3-meter. Coming off a strong showing on the 1-meter on Friday, EMU posted another incredible performance this evening with another Eastern sweep. Sophomore Noah Galluzzo (Mexico, N.Y) led the squad with a final tally of 347.35 points while senior Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) and junior Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) rounded out the sweep with 317.65 and 309.95 points, respectively.

The Green and White kicked off the final session of the meet with a first and third-place finish in the 200 free relay. The relay team of freshman Carter Swift (Shepparton, Victoria, Australia), Burton, Tyson, and Hoch clocked in with a time of 1:21.99 to lead the way. EMU's other relay was not far behind, touching in at 1:24.85.

Arrieta and Saladin came through for the Eagles, posting a pair of top-three finishes in the 500 free. Arrieta knocked off over five seconds from his previous season-best time to take second at 4:37.94, while Saladin touched in at 4:39.34, good for the third-place spot.

In the 200 IM, Kawaguchi registered his first event win of the day with a season-best time of 1:50.04 before a trio of freshmen placed in the top-five in the 50 free. Freshman Andrew Torres (Muncie Ind.-Delta) secured second-place with a season-best time of 20.99, just narrowingly beating out Swift by .07 of a second. Right on his heels was Hoch who locked up fourth-place with a time of 21.39.

The meet came to a close with another dominating relay effort for the Green and White in the 400 medley relay. Kawaguchi, Gingher, Johnson, and Swift combined for a time of 3:18.78 to take the win while EMU's other relay team finished second to provide EMU with another 1-2 punch.

The EMU Invitational marked the final competition of the calendar year for the Eagles. Eastern returns to action next month, Jan. 13, for a Mid-American Conference dual against Ball State in Muncie, Ind. Action is slated to being at 1 p.m.
