Day 1 Results
LAS VEGAS (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team completed day one of the Cliff Keen Invitational this evening, Friday, Dec. 1 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Of the 10 Eagles to hit the mats, nationally ranked redshirt senior heavyweight Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) will be the lone wrestler to advance to day two of the prestigious tournament.
Despite only advancing one grappler to the second day, it was not an unsuccessful day overall for the Eagles. EMU racked up 16 wins, totaling 27 tournament points. Out of the 45 teams, Eastern sits in 22nd place.
Hutchison, the No. 8 seed in the heavyweight bracket, began his day with a tight 4-1 decision win. In the Round of 16, he notched his fifth fall in six matches, pinning his opponent in just 18 seconds to get to the quarterfinals.
In the quarters, No. 2 nationally ranked Adam Coon of Michigan was able to pin Hutchison in the second period, dropping him into the consolation rounds, where he will pick up tomorrow against No. 25 nationally ranked Andrew Dunn of Virginia Tech.
Elsewhere, a trio of EMU wrestlers picked up three wins before being eliminated. Redshirt sophomore Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) had two decisions and a pin at 141 lbs. Redshirt senior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) was a scoring machine at 149 lbs., notching a major decision, technical fall, and a pin on the day. Redshirt freshman Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio-Lake) had two pins as well as a decision at 174 lbs., while both of his losses were to nationally ranked grapplers.
Redshirt juniors Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) and Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) both tallied two wins each at 133 and 197 lbs., respectively, all four by decision. Finally, redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) had a tough draw to his 165 lbs. bracket, as all three of his bouts were against nationally ranked foes. He notched the lone ranked upset of the day for EMU, defeating No. 12 Branson Ashworth of Wyoming to begin his day, before dropping bouts to the No. 18 and No. 15 ranked opponents.
Hutchison will wrestle again tomorrow in the consolation round, needing one win to reach the placement matches. Action from Las Vegas begins at noon Eastern Time.
