EMU defeated American in a thrilling comeback
BUIES CREEK, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team split a pair of duals at Campbell University Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5. The Eagles (2-1) won a neutral site battle with American University, 22-16, while dropping the bout with the host Fighting Camels, 24-10.
Against the American Eagles, EMU was bested in the first four matches to fall in a 13-0 hole early, but the Green and White stormed back, winning five of the last six, including two huge pins from redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) and redshirt freshman Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio-Lake), which ended up being the difference in the match. Versus CU, EMU won three bouts, including a major decision from redshirt junior Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven).
Overall on the day, Carson and redshirt junior Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) were the only two Eagles to earn two victories. Carson had a pin and decision, while MacCallum had a decision and major decision against American. MacCallum is now 3-0 to start his season.
Starting at 197 lbs., the AU Eagles had two nationally ranked wrestlers in the first four weight classes at 197 and 133, respectively. They took care of business and, combined with a major decision at 125 lbs, EMU found themselves in an early 13-0 deficit.
Eastern got on the board at 141 lbs. as redshirt sophomore Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) won a tight decision, 3-2, to make it 13-3. AU countered at 149 lbs. with a win, putting the team score 16-3 with just four matches remaining.
The Eagles made the most of the final four, starting with redshirt sophomore J.J. Wolfe (Dakota, Ill.-Dakota) at 157 lbs. Wolfe racked up the takedowns on his way to an 11-5 decision win. Then the former high school teammates, Carson and McNally, went back-to-back with pins, Carson in 4:13, and McNally in 4:15, to help the Eagles storm back, 18-16. With the dual still in doubt, MacCallum went to work at 174 lbs., dominating with a 13-1 major decision win to seal the come-from-behind win, 22-16.
EMU had a good start against Campbell, as Hillman notched a 12-4 major decision win, but the Fighting Camels strung together six straight wins, including three by major decision, to take a commanding 21-4 lead. Carson broke the streak with a hard fought 7-5 decision win, but that sealed the dual defeat. CU and EMU split the final two, with MacCallum capping his 3-0 weekend with a solid 5-2 decision.
EMU is now off from dual action until Nov. 26, but in the meantime will wrestle in a pair of tournaments, beginning with hosting the EMU Open Saturday, Nov. 11. The event will take place at the Convocation Center and will run throughout the day.
