Eastern had seven bonus point wins on the day, including four falls
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team claimed one dual victory in three opportunities at the Indiana Quad Dual Sunday afternoon, Nov. 26, at University Gym on the campus of Indiana University. The Eagles (3-3, 0-0 MAC) took a 28-12 victory over the University of Indianapolis, while dropping bouts to the host Hoosiers, 25-12, and then to Binghamton University, 28-13.
EMU won 12 of 30 potential bouts on the day, including seven by bonus points and four falls. Nationally ranked redshirt senior heavyweight Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), won both of his matches on the day, both by pin, over Indiana in 4:33 and then to cap off the day over Binghamton in 1:33. The two-time national qualifier is now off to a 7-2 start to his senior season with a team-high four pins.
Redshirt junior Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) also went 2-0 on the day, picking up decision wins over Indiana and Binghamton. He is 5-3 to start his year. Also picking up a pair of wins was redshirt freshman Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio-Lake) as he had a decision win over IU, and followed that up with a pin over Indy.
In the dual win over Indianapolis, Eastern won six of ten matches, including four out of six with bonus points. Redshirt freshman Tomas Gutierrez (Arvada, Colo.-Pomona) got things started with a 9-6 decision, and then Indy forfeited 133 lbs. to give EMU the early 9-0 advantage.
The Greyhounds battled back with two weight class wins to make it 9-6, but then the Eagles won the next three with pins from McNally and redshirt sophomore J.J. Wolfe (Dakota, Ill.-Dakota), as well as a major decision from redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake), to blow the dual open, 25-6, with three weight classes left.
Despite Indy winning two of the last three, an 8-4 decision win from redshirt sophomore Jared Langley (Newton, Kan.-Newton) at 197 lbs. was enough to cap the 28-12 dual win. It was Langley's first dual win of the season and second of his career.
Eastern returns to the mats next weekend for the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational held in Las Vegas. The two-day event runs Friday-Saturday, Dec. 1-2.
