CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team placed three student-athletes on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the league announced Tuesday, Nov. 21. A total of 52 student-athletes were named to the team.
The Academic All-MAC honor is to recognize student-athletes who excel in both athletics and in academics. To qualify, student-athletes must have at least 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have played in at least 50 percent of the contests in the particular sport.
Receiving the honors for the Eagles were: Sophomore Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney), redshirt senior Caleb Hess (Owosso, Mich.-Owosso), and senior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich.-Thomas J. Anderson).
Wicker stands alone as the only Eagle on the men's cross country team to hold a perfect 4.00 GPA. The intended nursing major had an impressive sophomore campaign, participating in four meets for the Green and White, including the MAC Championship where he earned Second Team All-MAC honors as the fifth EMU runner to cross the finish line. Additionally, the Pinckney, Mich. native ran strong to an 88th-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, while also competing in the toughest two regular season meets this year, the Notre Dame and Nuttycombe Invitationals.
Hess, a computer science major who has boasted a 3.80 grade point average, competed in four meets for the Eagles this season. The Owosso, Mich. native participated in the tough Nuttycombe Invite, notching a top-100 finish by crossing the finish line in 27:26.4, to claim 88th. Hess also posted a season-high finish at the Michigan Open, ranking 22nd out of the pool of runners. This is the second time the senior has earned Academic All-MAC honors.
As a product design and development major, Jozwiak holds an impressive 3.62 grade point average. The Southgate, Mich. native participated in five meets for the Green and White this year, including the MAC Championship where he placed 52nd in 26:08.6. Jozwiak also competed in both the Nuttycombe and Notre Dame Invites, while finishing with a team-best 58th place in the Spartan Invitational.
