YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team opens its 2017-18 season when it travels to North Carolina for a trio of duals, Nov. 3-5. The Eagles open the year Friday, Nov. 3, against Gardner-Webb, before heading to Buies Creek, N.C. to wrestle in a tri-dual against American and host Campbell Sunday, Nov. 5.
The duals can be followed live on Twitter by following @EMUWrestling. A live stream for the dual against Campbell will also be available at BigSouthSports.com. Full results will be posted to EMUEagles.com following the match.

2017-18 OUTLOOK: The Eagles enter the fourth year under Head Coach David Bolyard in 2017-18. Last season, EMU sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, and return two of those to the lineup this year in redshirt sophomore Noah Gonser and redshirt senior Gage Hutchison, who is a two-time NCAA qualifier. Overall, EMU returns seven of 10 primary starters from a season ago, while 12 grapplers have starting experience.

BATTLING THE BULLDOGS: EMU and Gardner-Webb have met four times since 2005-06, with EMU dominating the series over that time span. EMU won all four duals by combined scores of 148-24. This marks the first meeting between the two schools since 2013.

CAMPBELL TRI-DUAL CLASH: In the tri-dual hosted by Campbell, EMU will face the Fighting Camels for just the second time in program history. The first and only meeting between the two came back in 2011, when EMU blanked CU, 53-0. Sunday will mark the first ever meeting between American and EMU.

SAME FACES, NEW PLACES: This season for EMU, four of the seven returning starters will see a majority of their time at new weight classes. Bumping up weight will be Noah Gonser (125 to 133), Sa'Derian Perry (133 to 141), Kyle Springer (141 to 149), and Zac Carson (157 to 165).

PRESEASON NATIONAL RANKINGS: A pair of EMU wrestlers were ranked in the top-25 in the national rankings to begin the season. Noah Gonser came in as high as 18th at 125 lbs., while Gage Hutchison is as high as 19th as a heavyweight. A full list of rankings can be found on page nine.

PRESEASON MAC RANKINGS: Four EMU wrestlers are also ranked in the preseason top-four of their respective weight classes, with Kyle Springer No. 2 at 149 lbs, Zac Carson No. 3 at 165 lbs., Andrew McNally No. 4 at 174 lbs, and Gage Hutchison No. 2 at heavyweight.

MOVING UP THE RECORD BOOK: Entering the season, Gage Hutchsion has racked up 75 career victories in his EMU career, which ranks 15th all-time. EMU Hall of Fame inductee Steve Brown holds the all-time record with 117 wins.

MAC PRESEASON RANKINGS: The Mid-American Conference wrestling coaches announced the 2017-18 preseason team and individual weight class rankings in conjunction with the league office Wednesday, Oct. 11. The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team was selected to finish fifth in the conference, finishing with nine points in the poll.

The Eagles finished the year with a team grade point average of 3.341, which was good for 10th in the nation. The Green and White took top GPA honors in 2014-15, and finished 10th last year. The Eagles were one of five MAC schools to make the list, with Kent State finishing fourth, Central Michigan 15th, Old Dominion 22nd, and Ohio 27th.
