YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team began play at the inaugural Shirley Spork EMU Invitational Monday, Oct. 9, on the par 72, 6,127-yard Eagle Crest Golf Club course. With two rounds in the books, the Eagles currently sit in sixth place at 50 over par (311-315=626) with three Eagles inside the top-25.

Freshman Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) currently leads the Green and White, finishing the day seven-over-par with a 36-hole total of 151, tying for eighth overall. Sripatrpasite shot a opening round 75, before carding a 76 in the second round. 

Behind Sripatrpasite, junior Penelope Guilleux  (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) sits in a tie for 11th with a score of 152  after carding a pair of 76's. Senior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) also ranks inside the top-20, sitting in a tie for 24th (77-77=154). Sophomores Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) and Katelin Lawson (LaSalle, Ontario-Ridge Community-Tampa) are in ties for 50th and 55th, respectively.

The tournament is named in honor of the first female inducted into the E-Club Hall of Fame, Shirley Spork. While attending then-Michigan State Normal College, Spork won the Women's District Match Play Championship three times in four years. In 1947, she was the winner of the first-ever National Collegiate Championship held for women's athletics, plus she was the victor of the 1949 Michigan Amateur. In 1959 along with Marilynn Smith, Betty Hicks and Barbara Rotvig, she founded the LPGA's Teaching and Club Professional Division.
