The junior garnered the weekly accolade for the second time this season
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — On the heels of a pair of clean sheets, Eastern Michigan University junior goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) reeled in Mid-American Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors for the period ending Oct. 22, the league office announced Tuesday, Oct. 24.
It is the third time Williams has garnered the weekly award in her career, including the second time this season. The conference's announcement marks the first time EMU has won the award multiple times in a season since 2014 when Angela Vultaggio and Megan McCabe were honored by the MAC. Additionally, Williams is the first Eagle to garner the distinction multiple times in a season since Vultaggio and McCabe were each three-time MAC Player of the Week selections in 2013.
Williams was incredible for the Eagles in week five of MAC play, Oct. 19-22, leading the Green and White to a pair of shutout victories to keep its postseason hopes alive. She totaled 12 saves on 36 shots faced and did not yield a goal in 180 minutes of action.
In Eastern's first match, Oct. 19, Williams held off a potent Western Michigan attack. Facing a career-high 29 shots, Williams tied her career-best with 10 stops en route to her third shutout of the season. The Kansas City, Mo. native then led a stout defensive effort against Northern Illinois, Oct. 22, holding the Huskies to just two shots on goal to escape with a 1-nil win.
Posting back-to-back shutouts for the third time in her career, Williams is one of just four keepers to accomplish the feat in EMU history. Additionally, she moved her career save total to 234, ranking sixth all-time in EMU laurels, and recorded the ninth and 10th shutouts of her career.
Eastern Michigan continues its fight for the postseason Thursday, Oct. 26, in Mount Pleasant, Mich. against in-state rival Central Michigan University. Kickoff of the regular season finale between the Eagles and Chippewas is scheduled for 3 p.m.
