The Eastern Michigan University baseball team wrapped up its 2017 fall schedule with the annual Green and White series Wednesday, Oct. 18-Sunday, Oct. 22. The Eagles played three intrasquad games over that span between members of the team that were drafted onto two separate squads.

Team White, coached assistant coach by Eric Roof, took the series, 2-1, winning games one and three. Team Green, coached by volunteer assistant coach Matt Rembielak, took game two of the series.

GAME ONE: Team White 10, Team Green 4 (7 inn.)

In game one, the White team used a six-run sixth inning, followed by a four-run seventh, to pull away late. While the hits were just 9-7 in favor of White, their pitching staff held Green to just three base runners over the final four innings.
Three players had two-RBI games for White, including senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic), junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), and redshirt sophomore Joey Sweigart (Saline, Mich.-Saline). There were also a pair of multi-hit games, including a three-double, two run day from sophomore Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community) and a 2-for-3 outing from freshman Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock), who also had an RBI and two runs.

For team Green offensively, junior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) had two RBI's on a double, while redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Redshirt freshman Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and junior Kolton Schenker (Augusta, Kan.-Augusta (Labette C.C.)) had an RBI double each.

Defensively, junior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.)) pitched four scoreless innings to start the game for team Green, only giving up two hits while striking out two. For team White, the bullpen was spotless, as redshirt junior Zach Wallace (Alamo, Calif.-De La Salle (Palomar College)) and freshmen Kolby Dewhirst (Livonia, Mich.-Franklin) and Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard) combined to go the final four innings without yielding a run. Granzotto struck out the side in his only inning of work.

GAME TWO: Team Green 10, Team White 2 (7 inn.)

Game two was just about the opposite result, as team Green ambushed White with a nine-run second inning to put the game away early. Hits ended 10-4 in favor of the Green squad.

Redshirt junior Alex Wolanski (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley) had the big hit for Green in the nine-run frame, notching a three-run home run down the left field line. There were also extra base RBIs from Cruz, freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), and sophomore Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern), who had two RBIs on two hits. Finally, Monahan had a three-hit game, including an RBI.

Team White's lone RBI came off the bat of Easter, a run-scoring single, while fellow freshman Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) added a double. On the mound, junior Mitchell Sparks (Willis, Texas-Carmel (Ind.) (Iowa Lakes C.C.)) pitched four strong innings for Green, only giving up one earned run. Freshman Dillon Schroeder (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford Senior) and sophomore John Holt (Saline, Mich.-Saline) pitched three combined scoreless innings in relief, while Holt notched three strikeouts. For team White, Dewhirst pitched two scoreless relief innings with a K, while Granzotto notched three more punch outs in his two clean innings of work.

GAME THREE: Team White 8, Team Green 2 (7 inn.)

In the rubber match, team White scored in five of the seven innings to cruise to the series win. They spread 11 hits across the diamond, to Green's six.

For team White, Peggs finished the game with two hits and an RBI, while Easter and Schuemann both added a pair of hits and RBI's of their own. Freshman Luke McGuire (Shelby Township, Mich.-Stevenson) had an RBI on a sacrifice fly offensively, while also tossing a scoreless inning for White, while junior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) had an RBI triple.

Offensively for Green, Na. Jones had a triple, and later scored on a freshman Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) single. Timko notched the second home run of the series, this one a towering shot to left field, while Monahan tallied an RBI single as well.

On the mound, DeVenney struck out three in two innings of work for White, while Granzotto struck out his seventh batter of the series in a scoreless frame. Dewhirst, Schroeder, Sparks, and sophomore Brett Stenger (Kingsville, Ontario-Kingsville District (Indian Hills C.C.)) all had scoreless innings for their respective teams as well.

This concludes the 2017 fall schedule for the Eagles. Stay tuned to EMUEagles.com for the release of the 2018 schedule in the coming weeks.
