Men's Swimming and Diving Downs Denison in a Balanced Effort

Eight different Eagles had a first-place finish en route to the victory

GRANVILLE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – With eight different Eagles recording an event win, the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team defeated Denison University, 187.5-111.5, Saturday, Oct. 21.
Eastern kicked off the meet with a first and third place finish in the 200 medley relay. The relay, consisting of senior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), sophomore Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev), senior Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford), and freshman Carter Swift (Shepparton, Victoria, Australia) , notched the top spot at 1:32.53.
In the 200 freestyle, junior Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C-Cary) and Burton grabbed two of the top-three spots. Kawaguchi touched in at 1:41.13, while Burton followed close behind at 1:41.69.
Moving to the 100 backstroke, sophomore Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) earned nine points for the Eagles after clocking in at 51.35 while sophomore Matthew Martin (Brecksville, Ohio- Brecksville Broadview Heights) was just edged out of the top-three with a fouth-place finish at 52.24.
Freshman Ben Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa.-State College Area) swept the breaststroke events against the Big Red. In the 100, Gingher took the lead in the opening stretch and never gave it up, clocking in at 57.89. In similar fashion, he dominated the 200, touching in two seconds before fellow freshman Ben Brooks (Avon, Ohio-Avon).
Following a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly by junior Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wis.-Greenfield), Swift showed his speed in the 50 free, earning another top-finish for the Green and White.
Taking a break, the competition moved to the springboard for the 3-meter where freshman Al'x Pierre (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) shined. Pierre won the event with a final score of 264.75 while sophomore Noah Galluzzo (Mexico, N.Y.) and junior Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) rounded out the top-three for an Eastern sweep with scores of 252.98 and 240.15, respectively.
Moving back to the blocks, Swift kept the momentum up from his prior win by taking the 100 free for himself. After he touched in at 46.45, junior Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England -Northgate) followed in at 46.66, good for third.
A 1-2 punch in the 200 back was led by Kawaguchi and Segal. Kawaguchi touched in first at 1:48.85 while Segal came in second at 1:51.33.
After a second place finish in the 500 free by sophomore Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), the action moved back to the springboard where this time, Gillis earned the top spot with a score of 295.20. Pierre snagged second at 267.23 while Galluzzo rounded out the top three at 212.03.
Following Burton's first top-finish of the afternoon in the 100 fly, Perez grabbed the last individual win of the meet in the 200 individual medley. After brushing in at 1:54.43, Brooks took third at 1:58.07.
The men concluded the meet with another top-finish in the 400 free, consisting of Kawaguchi, Burton, Tyson, and Swift, finishing at 3:03.24.
The Eagles return to action when it takes on Oakland University, Nov. 11. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Jones Natatorium.
