Kaylin Williams tied a season-high with seven saves in the loss
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEalges.com) – A two-goal lead slipped away as the Eastern Michigan University soccer team dropped a double-overtime match to Miami University Sunday, Oct. 15. The Eagles (5-11-1, 2-6 MAC) scored twice in the first 20 minutes but could not hold on as the RedHawks (2-12-1, 2-5-1 MAC) claimed a 3-2 victory. Junior Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) tied a season-high with seven saves in the setback.
Eastern Michigan was outshot by a 20-16 tally, while Williams and the Green and White held a 7-6 edge in saves. EMU also managed more corners (8-5) than MU.
Redshirt junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) served up a cross from the sideline, connecting with freshman Parys Kerr (Whitby, Ontario-Pickering) on the back post. Volleying in the cross, Kerr's goal, her second of the season, put the Eagles ahead 1-0 just eight minutes into the match.
Roughly 10 minutes later, junior Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name) doubled EMU's lead. After a trio of saves by Williams, the Eagles countered. Eastern's initial shot, a laser off the foot of Nason was saved and pushed out for a corner. Freshman Alia Frederick (Linden, Mich.-Linden) delivered a ball into the 18 where Davis slotted home her third goal of the year 17:58 into the game.
Miami responded quickly, breaking up the shutout in the 20th minute on a header, to send the match into the break with EMU leading 2-1.
In the second half, the RedHawks came out pressing for the game-tying goal. Williams and the Eagle defense held strong, but a 65th minute header of a corner kick leveled the score at two.
Eastern Michigan put together a few chances down the stretch, but through 90 minutes the game was tied, 2-2.
In the first overtime, EMU held a 2-1 lead in shots but came up empty, forcing a second OT period and setting up Miami for the game-winner in the 107th minute. MU's Katie Alexander blasted a shot from 25 yards out after collecting a loose ball, ending the game 3-2 in favor of Miami.
The Green and White look to bounce back Thursday, Oct. 19, when it plays host to Western Michigan University. Kickoff between the Eagles and Broncos is set for 4 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
