EMU Rowing Opens Season at Head of the Grand

Races begin at 9:15 a.m. in East Lansing

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team lifts the lid on the 2017-18 season Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Head of the Grand in East Lansing, Mich. This will be the fifth straight season in which the Eagles will compete in the meet, which takes place on Grand River, and the sixth time in program history.

The Eagles will get a chance to see many new faces hit the water for the first time, as the Green and White will be putting 10 different boats into competition.  This includes three Varsity 4+ boats, two Novice 4+ boats, two Novice 8+ boats, and two Varsity 8+ boats.

The all-day competition begins at 9:15 a.m. with the Women's Varsity 4+ race, followed by the 1x and 2- at 10:15 and 10:45, repsectively.  Eastern will square off against in-state foes Grand Valley State and Michigan State, as well as several others. The Novice 8+ race will start at 11 a.m., with the Novice 4+ race taking place at 12:25 p.m. Finally, the Women's Varsity 8+ race is set to begin at 1 p.m.

At last season's meet, the Green and White Novice 8+ and 4+ shined, as EMU won both races. Beginning with the Novice 8+, the 'A' boat claimed first in the five-boat race with a time of 13:15, defeating a boat from Grand Valley State by five seconds. The 'B' boat came in right behind with a bronze finish, crossing the line with in 13:41. In the Novice 4+ race, two EMU boats went up against one from Northern Michigan. The Eagle 'A' and 'B' boats took one-two with times of 13:36 and 15:20, respectively.
