Eagles Volleyball Falls in Four at Bowling Green

EMU returns to action Saturday night at Miami at 5 p.m.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – (EMUAthletics.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team struggled to find its bearings against Bowling Green State University Friday, Oct. 13, falling to the Falcons in four sets (28-26, 19-25, 20-25, ) at the Stroh Center.
Junior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) led the way for the Eagles, finishing with 15 kills and 11 digs, while redshirt junior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) registered her fifth straight double-double with 21 assists and 12 digs. The setter also added a season-high four kills.
Joining Smith in double digit kills was senior Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont), who had 10 kills in the match. Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) also finished with a double-double of 16 assists and 11 digs for her fourth straight. Sophomore Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) led the Eagles with 31 digs.
"Defensively we were unbelievable tonight," said coach Kimi Olson. "We were in the match every step of the way. Camille joined the 30-dig club in four sets tonight, Sam anchored us at the net with nine blocks; our defense was just awesome."
The Eagles locked into a stellar match from the start, battling back-and-forth with the Falcons in the first set. After failing to finish the game at 25, Eastern faced a BGSU set-point before rallying to take the opening victory, 28-26. A kill from Smith wrapped up the opening set.
Bowling Green responded with a convincing 25-19 victory in set two, holding Eastern Michigan to a meager .056 attack percentage in the set while hitting .263 themselves.
The battle continued in the third set and the score stayed close until the teams hit the very end of the match. EMU was able to pull within a single point at 20-19, but BG closed on a 5-1 run to slam the door shut in the third set.
Eastern's struggles remained in the fourth set, as Bowling Green used a 7-1 run early and continued rolling throughout the set, building a lead that reached as high as eight points. The Eagles mounted a ferocious rally to cut the lead to just two points, but the Falcons responded and pulled away to the final score of
Eastern Michigan hit .136 for the match compared to Bowling Green's .191. The loss was the first for EMU at the Stroh Center since the 2012 season.
