EMU was selected to finish fifth, while four individuals were top-four in their weight class

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference wrestling coaches announced the 2017-18 preseason team and individual weight class rankings in conjunction with the league office Wednesday, Oct. 11.

The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team was selected to finish fifth in the conference, finishing with nine points in the poll. Five-time defending champion Missouri was picked to win the conference with 29 points, followed by Central Michigan (18) and Buffalo (16). Ohio came slotted just ahead of EMU with 10 points, while trailing the Eagles were Kent State (7), Northern Illinois (6), and Old Dominion (5).

The eight schools were ranked based on the number of first through fourth-place votes that were earned in the individual voting system.  A first-place vote was worth four team points; a second-place vote earned three team points; third-seeded votes were worth two team points, while a fourth-place tally earned one point in the team ranking system.

Individually, EMU had four wrestlers selected in the preseason top-four of their respective weight classes. Redshirt-senior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) was picked second at 149 lbs., redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) was slotted third at 165 lbs., redshirt freshman Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio-Lake) debuted at fourth at 174 lbs, and two-time NCAA qualifier redshirt senior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) was tabbed second at heavyweight.

The rankings will be released each month throughout the season, with one additional ranking system (two total) in January and February.

Eastern Michigan enters the fourth season under the direction of Head Coach David Bolyard. In his third season at the helm, Bolyard and the Eagles went 6-8 in duals, including a solid four dual wins on the road. The Eagles were rewarded for their efforts at the end of the season by sending three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. This was the fourth time in six seasons EMU has sent at least three grapplers to the national tournament.

The 2018 MAC Wrestling Championships will be held March 3-4, and are hosted by Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich.  The MAC will serve as the host of the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships, March 15-17, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

EMU's season gets underway in just under a month with a dual against Gardner-Webb, Friday, Nov. 3 in Boiling Springs, N.C.
