YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team kicked off the 2017 season Friday night, Jan. 6, ultimately falling to the University of Kentucky, 195.075 – 192.050. The Eagles started off strong on vault and bars, but faltered late on beam.
"I thought we had some really good performances today," said Head Coach Sarah Brown. "Ciara Gresham had a great day, competing on beam for the first time. Megan Marino had a nice floor routine, and Catie Conrad also had some good routines. I thought we were looking good through two events, but the falls on beam cost us. We picked up the energy at the end, but we'll use this as a learning experience for the future."
The Green and White kicked off the meet on vault as the home team. Senior Kelsie Brooks (Winston, Ga. – Alexander) got things started with a yurchenko full, taking just a small hop back and earning a 9.6. Fellow senior Sydney McEachern (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Kelvin) kept things rolling with the same vault, taking an even smaller hop and scoring a 9.675. Sophomore Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill. – Sacred Heart Classical Center) then made her official EMU debut, taking a step forward on her yurchenko half. Junior Jules Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz. – Mesquite) stuck her vault and notched another 9.675. Sophomore Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill. – Belleville) and junior Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J. – Holmdel) concluded the event with two more strong vaults, both scoring 9.675s, respectively, giving EMU a 48.375 on the event. After one event, EMU trailed the Wildcats, 48.650 – 48.375.
Schwartz began bars with another strong routine, posting a solid double layout to dismount and earning a 9.575. Senior Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Sturgeon Heights) capped off an excellent routine with a stuck dismount, earning her a 9.8. Fellow senior Lacey Rubin (Plainsview, N.Y. – Plainsvire Old Bethpage John F Kennedy) followed Gervais with another stick, scoring a 9.75. Junior Catie Conrad (Brighton, Mich. – Brighton) kept the trend moving, as she also stuck her dismount, earning a 9.8. Finally, Valentin anchored the Green and White once again, posting a big 9.825. After two, the Eagles were narrowly behind Kentucky, 97.500 - 97.250.
Hultgren got EMU started on beam, but slipped on her dismount, ultimately scoring a 9.15. Gresham put the Eagles back on track, however, scoring a 9.7 in her first official EMU beam routine. Conrad followed up with another hit set for the Eagles, notching a 9.75. Eastern encountered some more adversity on the next two routines, as Rubin and Gervais both were unable to stay on, but finished strong. The Eagles finished the rotation with a 46.750, and trailed Kentucky, 146.275 – 144.000.
Eastern concluded the day on floor, with Brooks leading off. The senior notched a hit routine for the Green and White, finishing with a 9.625. Junior Megan Marino (Girard, Ohio – Howland) competed next in her only event on the day, notching a solid 9.75, tying her career-high. From there, sophomore Sydney Audet (Sylvania, Ohio – Sylvania Northview) made her EMU debut, and was followed by junior Kirsten Gendron (Birch Run, Mich. – Frankenmuth). Gresham posted another nice routine, scoring a 9.65. Gresham and McEachern closed the meet out with two more hit sets, scoring 9.65 and 9.775, respectively. With the scores tallied up, the Wildcats emerged victorious, 195.075 – 192.050.
The Eagles continue the 2017 season on the road next weekend with a trip west. Eastern travels to Champaign-Urbana, Ill. for a tri-meet with Illinois and Rutgers, Saturday, Jan. 14, at 4 p.m.
