The sophomore had the opportunity to train and compete with national coaches

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University sophomore rower Baylee Kinkade (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) had a tremendous opportunity this past November, competing on the national stage at the 2016 US Under 23 Identification Camp in Princeton, N.J.

The camp gave Kinkade the opportunity to run through drills and workouts with the US National Rowing Team coaches, as well as compete side-by-side with some of the top rowers in the country. The ID camp allows for the national team coaches to identify potential candidates to make up the 2017 team.

"Baylee has done a lot of work to be the first EMU rower to be invited to a US Rowing development camp, and has really stepped up to lead our sophomore class through her actions," EMU Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "She is paving the way for the future of EMU rowing and we are proud to have her represent us."

Kinkade did not automatically make her way to Princeton for the weekend-long camp. She, like everyone else, had to earn her way there by submitting fast enough 2,000 and 6,000-meter times. Once there, the sophomore went through grueling drills and workouts, informational meetings, such as how to make the national team, as well as nutritional sessions.

"The first day, we did erg tests to help place us into line ups," Kinkade explained. "We did a ten stroke max power test, along with a minute long max power test at a stroke rate of 40. On the water, we worked on general stroke development. They also taught me how to skull (using two oars instead of one). The next day, we were supposed to be out on the water, but the weather was bad, so we did long steady state pieces in the erg room."

Kinkade was the first EMU rower to participate in the camp in program history. Being only a sophomore, and in her second year of rowing, Kinkade was one of the younger and more inexperienced participants, but she did not let that get the best of her.

"Most of the rowers there were several years older than me, and many attended big-name schools like Princeton," Kinkade said. "That didn't faze me though, because reputation doesn't matter in rowing. Good coaching and diligent training matter. I'm proud to represent Eastern, and I wouldn't have had it any other way."

All in all, the camp was a valuable experience for Kinkade, and one that she can use to better her career, as well as EMU's upcoming spring season.

"The camp helped me better understand how to take things to the next level," Kinkade stated. "I may not make the national team selection camp this summer, but I'm only in my second year of rowing. Either way, I'm going to keep working hard. I really enjoyed my whole experience at the camp."

Kinkade and the Eagles return to the water Sat, Feb. 25, with races against Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
