Student-athletes at EMU scored a 3.238 GPA in the latest term

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – It was another banner semester in the classroom for Eastern Michigan University student-athletes, as they combined to record a 3.238 grade point average (GPA) during the Fall of 2016, representing the highest mark in school history. Additionally, the cumulative GPA for all student-athletes was the department's all-time best tally at 3.266.

This is the 14th term in a row EMU student-athletes have earned over a 3.0 GPA, the EMU Student-Athlete Support Services office announced Monday, Jan. 30.  

"Every time the academic bar is raised, our student-athletes exceed it," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. "We are tremendously proud of our student-athletes' academic efforts and their record setting grades this semester.  To have five teams earn their best GPA in team history is an outstanding accomplishment.  Their performance is a direct reflection of the quality of student-athletes our coaches recruit and their commitment to balancing the academic and athletic demands."

Of the 534 student-athletes enrolled at EMU in the fall, 386 student-athletes (72 percent) posted a 3.0-or-higher grade point average for the term. Furthermore, a total of 253 student-athletes (69 percent) hold a cumulative GPA above 3.0.
 
For the semester, women's cross country led all sports with a team GPA of 3.735 on EMU's 4.0 scale. Women's soccer (3.716) was next, while men's golf (3.643) was  third. Women's swimming & diving (3.548) and women's golf (3.546) rounded out the top five programs for the fall semester.
 
Of EMU's 21 athletics programs, 17 teams finished the semester with a GPA better than 3.0.

Four programs achieved record highs academically with baseball, football, men's golf, and women's soccer setting all-time bests for both term and cumulative GPAs. Meanwhile, rowing posted its highest cumulative GPA in program history.
